Hey guys...wonderful site here. I just got into the home recording thing and I picked up a very cool unit to start with. I didn't want to go crazy just yet...lol...and I got a really nice deal on a Boss BR-900 CD with a 1 gig card. I have been able to get some pretty cool stuff out of this unit so far. The first thing I noticed though is that the drum sounds were pretty weak, so I picked up a Boss Dr-880 and figured I could use that with my acousic act as well as recording. I have the effects thing already taken care of with a TC 2290 and an Eventide unit that I use in my guitar rig, I can pretty much get any effect I need out of those two units.

ANYWAY....

I was looking to get a strip unit like the two below and I was wondering if anyone has opinion on these units or similar units in this price range. I am new to this and don't have a lot to blow so this is the limit of my price range. I can get these units on the used market for around $500 give or take...

They are the Focusrite Twin Track Pro and the Voice Master Pro. I will be using them on vocals, and guitars exclusively. Thanks for any help...and if anyone has these units or similar for sale, feel free to drop me a line at edgarallanpoe@verizon.net.

My brother has the Voicemaster Pro and honestly I wasn't impressed by it. It's kind of gimmicky, a bad case of featuritis in my opinion. Think about going with the best preamp you can afford, followed up by maybe a compressor. That may run you a little more than $500, but keeping it simple and high quality will sound better.

Preamps in that price range are units like the Groove Tubes Brick and the Grace Designs 101. There are others as well, but the idea is to stick with quality.

If you don't mind buying used, a compressor that goes cheap and is kind of a sleeper is the Aphex Expressor 651 and 661.
