Hey folks, just wondered if you could point me toward a small, good quality, midpriced acoustic kit for studio work. Mostly used for rock alt type stuff. Just a simple kit - not one with 1000 toms or double kick. Ta muchB-)

I currently use a Rogers kit in the studio and a Mapex maple snare
You can find a rogers kit for a good price used.

Also I really like the tones of a gretsch kit.

rogers kit

I NEED to know how you got that snare sound, obviously its mostly a tuning thing, but if you dont mind revieling what you did as far as mics, placment, and most importanlyl; mixing.

Really nice drum sounds!

How did you get the kick that solid and dry of overtones?

I don't have any appreciable deadening in my kick and I get some unwanted tones. but when the heads are loose it sounds papery.

awesome sounding snare!

is it mic'd top and bottom?

also what heads were you using top and bottom?

Mad like the sound of the kick and snare. Im typing on my phone so please excuse my inability to explain in huge detail what im looking for:-(. I aint a drummer its for the bands that come in to record. Im looking for a general joy division type sound. Obviously production played a huge part in their sound, but it all started from an acoustic kit!

Hey lads, decided just to buy a cheaper complete kit. It means i wont get too annoyed or start cringing when people start thrashing on it. If im not too keen on the sound of something ill try out + then buy a new snare - etc. I dont have any hardware at the moment so i think its most sensable option to get up and running. What are your thoughts on these?
Yamaha gigmaker studio, mapex q series, gretch blackhawk.

check that out. I really love the snare sound too.

As far as my snare and how I record.

I do two different things. First what I do, is take the snare I'm about to record with. Mic it separately in my room. Usually a 57 or a e604 on top. and typically a 414 on the bottom. I generally add a small condenser like a KSM184 or such on top. Room mic maybe.. depends.. anyways.. I record that. and sample it...

When I go to record my drumset I mic the bottom and top normally probably using the same mics. and use drumagog to play the sample 50/50 with the live mix.

It basically acts as a gate, and then some.

There's a lot more detail to it of course, but that's how I get the snare in particular to stand out.

oh and a quick search on ebay..

i wouldn't mind getting another one.

I'll definatley look at rogers drums in the future, they sound the business but for now i'm just going to get a cheapish kit, once we start earning from our little project I'll invest more. Then the cheap kit that i buy now can go into the practice room. As for the snare although i like the sound mad hatter it's a little too 80s for me but along those lines. Ill open this debate in a more user friendly thread, I was typing on my phone before - i aint to thrilled with doing that again!! God how people text for fun, madness. Thanks for all your input

I also own a black panther phospher bronze snare.

Do you have a metal or wood snare?

its the wood one

I'm wondering where you're posting from, because I've not heard of the Yamaha Gigmaker kit here in the States. It looks as if it's similar to their Rydeen series.

In any case, I strongly suggest the Yamaha. Even on their entry-level kits the shells are made extremely well with precisely cut bearing edges. In other words, they'll tune up easily and sound decent if you take the time to tune them well. Yamaha's hardware is also extremely high-quality, so you won't have stands that wont stay tight, flimsy pedals, etc. They may not be maple shells with high-end finishes, but the Yamaha quality is there.

The only experience I've had with entry-level Mapex drums is replacing their busted lugs, so consider me slightly biased there, and word has it that the Gretsch shells sound like garbage thanks to horrible quality control.

Is that just the lower end gretsch kits your talking about. I quite like the sound of the catalina jazz, but have only heard them through you tube. You'd expect these big companies to employ pro drummers to record a demo of their kits for buyers. Some of us don't have access to huge instrument centres where we can try before we buy.

Mapex Black Panther Birdseye Maple Snare

Mic that however you want, it's going to sound good. :)

which size is that on the recording? the link goes to all sizes. it really does sound good, as does your entire song--very professional! i was thinking of getting a metal snare since i already have a maple (pearl custom free-floater too!), but it's a piccolo, so it's extremely hard to get good recorded sound out of. did you do that recording completely by yourself? man, it sounds like it could be released on the free market!

Mine is the 14x5.5. If you're looking for a metal snare, I also own a Phospher Bronze http://www.musiciansfriend.com/prod...hor-Bronze-Snare-Drum?sku=448507&src=3SOSWXXA

Mine however is a 13x5. I found it for like 300 somewhere. It's reallly hard to find though, but I got that brand new at that price.
There's a black panther phospher bronze and a precious metals phospher bronze.
However, when I got the precious metals one, it came in a black panther box.

I don't know if there is a real difference except for the badge on the side..

well i was looking for a metal snare, but after hearing that maple of yours, i might be better off with a second maple!
