opinions on one band, two studios.

hey guys,

i have two recordings here of a local band.
same people, same instruments, but two different songs, recorded at two different studios.


i have my own strong opinions, as do the band, but i was hoping for some comparative feedback from you lot.

i'll admit now, i recorded one of these tracks, but i'm not looking to have my ego stroked, i just want to know if other people view these two mixes the same way as me and the band do.

Hey, I'm listening on a laptop hooked up to bookshelf speakers and a sub, so...

I listened to both and much prefer the 2nd mix. It sounds fuller but also has greater clarity from what I can hear.

The volume is much lower on mix 1, which shouldn't matter in theory, but even when I turned it up to match the level of mix 2, it sounded smaller and didn't have the same impact.

I apologize in advance if yours was mix#1, but they seem like night and day to me.
 
Hi there... the 2nd sounds a lot better, but even saying that, i found some things that could be fixed in the 2nd link like the drums, i didn't like the drums, the kick is missing with the bass, and the tom at the right is too loud.

The first link the vocals were out of tune... it seems there wasn't much dedication... maybe they paid just for a quick mix.

2 sounds much better, but both sound like demos. Not so much like a pro release or anything. 2 is closest to it.
 
I has a lo fi sound that doesn't sound intentional...

The kick seems too loud and distracting in the 2nd one.

I really like the band and the songs!!
 
IMO there is no comparison. Track one sounds thin and one dimensional. The drums sound awful, the vocals are uneven, too loud in places and too soft in others. Not mixed very well.

Track two sounds much better. Much more balance and punch. Vocals are much warmer. I hope this is the one you did. If I were this band, I'd fire studio one.
 
Yup, definitely version 2.
Sounds like the rythm section was recorded in one go all together, is that so? Some timing issues with the drums at the start.
Snare sounds pretty weak. Good band though, very good music and a good singer.

you've pretty much 100% confirmed what i thought, and my recording was indeed mix 2.


since i'm goin to uni, the band are shopping for another studio to record with, and happened upon an opportunity to record a track somewhere for some tv/radio promotion or something (song1)

i was then asked for my professional opinion, cos the band weren't too sure about it, and needless to say i shat all over that recording! :D


i just wanted to make sure i wasn't being too critical due to knowing the band and maybe having an unfair bias towards my own mix.

zero00, you're totally right, the kick in mine has definitely got more high punch than low thump, and yeh the to is very loud, but that's like 'their thing'.:laughings:

I love the ambiance of mix 2. It's well preformed, well recorded, and well mixed. The only thing is the tom in the right speaker is too loud.
 
*note* I haven't read any of the previous comments, so, this is 100% what my ears told me.

band 1 - vocals seem to have captured a bit of the room. The drums seem distant. Pretty mono-sounding. Could be much wider. Kind of weak sounding recording. The vocal mic seemed to capture a very non-flattering tone of the voices.

band 2 - Immediately more prominent recording. Female vocals sound wonderful. Much wider recording. 1000% better than the first recording.. Not even in the same ball-park. I think the guitars could come up a bit. Yeah.. To my ears, the band1 recording sounded like it was recorded in a closet. band2 sounds much more pro.
 
Number 2, I like number 2's, Im going for a number 2.......
