Opinions on mix!

Hey guys and gals! This is my first submission in a long time, and I could use some help.

This is a demo of a western swing band that came in last week for a demo.

The session was fraught with all kinds of problems. Basically , I had a group of 70 to 80 year old folk who had never been in the studio before. They refused to wear headphones, they HAD to play all in the same room with just a few open mics and monitor speakers blaring full bore to the point I had a terrible time with feedback. (yeesh)
Well....
I hope this sounds ok, let me know what you think. Due to monetary constraints and their lack of hearing, they did not want me to spend too much time on it, but I hate to let anything out of the studio that sucks.

Well, Tom, other than some minor performance issues (pitchy vocals, fiddle not quite in tune, etc.), this is pretty damn good for the genre. I'd say you did a great job under the circumstances. I was expecting much worse.

My only suggestions would be to turn the bass down a touch and see if you can possibly make the fiddle a little more clear/bright sounding (probably just old strings).

Good work on the recording.

Thanks! Yeah, I am notorious for too much Bass Guitar.
I just like it more than most.
I think I will back it off a tad.
The violin was a problem. The y sound is a combination of piezo pickup and bleed on 6 mics.

Phase cancellations abound and caused the mix to be a little murky.
I may work on a little EQ to pull some murk out.

Lordy, your description had me rolling...I can just see all these octagenarians holding headphones with confused looks on their faces.

T- sounds a ton better than I would have gotten, mostly because after about the 4th feedback burst, I would have thrown a grenade in. Seriously, you did a very nice job. One of the guitar players was actually decent. I think the fiddle is mixed perfectly...being out of pitch 80% of the time just makes it feel like it's not sitting right.

Just to be safe (considering the genre), I too think you could get away with less bass, but it really sounds good. They're not gonna' care if it thumps, and it is just a TAD fat on my system.

I can tell you spent a lot of time on this.

I was crying.

One of the guys was so hard of hearing his guitar was nailing every meter. He actually was the best picker though.

Yeah.. I probably need to knock the Bass guitar back a notch.

I really liked the stuff. Pretty fun sounding, and I don't listen to this normally. Sounded pretty good. I think the mix is pretty normal for this genre of music. Plenty O bass, and nice clean drums.
