This is a band I worked with over the weekend. I spent some time on the mix. Drums were recorded with GLS Audio ES-57's on the top of each drums, AKG c2000b under the snare, Samson C01's as overheads, Samson Q-Kick on kick along with a home made subkick, and a c02 on the high hat. Vocals were done on a Octava MK-319. Bass was DIed and mixed with a miked bass amp (ES-57 on axis). Any guesses how the guitars were done? All inputs were put through an Alesis IO|26 and SM Pro Audio pr8 MKII with ADAT lightpipe add card. I need any and all opinions on the overall mix and sonic qualities of the mix. The mix is a little loud because I do not believe this band has any intentions of getting it mastered. I'm more focused on the sound rather than opinions of the music but all opinions are welcomed. I am basically working on a digital resume in hopes of an internship at a larger studio so this mix is crucial along with some other mixes that I will post at later dates. I will chose the best out of the bands I record and compile them for the resume.

THANKS AHEAD OF TIME!

sounds clean not a bad mix at all.. im not too big of a guitar person so no help here but its got a channel delay on it

THANKS! guitar was double tracked, it gives the same effect of a channel delay (but better mono compatibility imo). a very good guess tho.

Very nic mix. Everything is pretty much where it should be. I'm not a big fan of this kindof music, but recording wise it's really really good! Mabe a little more bass guitar wouldn't hurt, but I'm a bassist so I kinda always wanna hear more bass.

Cheers!

Sounds pretty good here. By 'pretty good' I mean in comparison to a commercial mix. You got those drums pumping good. I'm guessing simulanalog jcm900 for the guitars. I think this shows that good recordings can be made with cheap mikes and preamps. What's your opinion of the PR8MKII?

I thought the drum effect in the middle of the song was kind of crappy. :p

The Bass guitar sounds sharp from the 6 string to me.
Or perhaps its intonation needs checking?

Oh and the filtered snare effect is a terrible idea. :p

Sounds pretty good to me. my only nits would be a lack of kick punch on my system - its there, but doesnt have any thump to it.....and that crazy drum filter thing in the middle. The panning of the toms is a litle distracting as well. Too wide. Overall its good though. :)

Now that you mention it, I thought so too but forgot to mention it.

The bass in bass drum is M.I.A.
The bass git could use some definition.
the sanre sounds fine to me.
The tom pan is too busy.
Good work otherwise.

Thanks guys. The kick I ended up taking some of the thump out because it seemed like too much on my system. But when i compared it to other artists in this genre, I need to put some more low end thump back in. I think I filtered out like 50hz and below so ill prolly just take the filter out completely. The guitars were DIed using Amplitube. I also miked the cab up but found the regular amp had way too much distortion. Ill check the tuning on the bass, he may have to redo it. We checked it for intonation problems but they were fairly new strings so it did fall out of tune rather quickly. He didnt play much just kind of followed the guitars but I'll see what I can do to add a little more definition to it. I'll bring the toms in some, sometimes I get a little pan-happy :D . As for the filtered effect on the drums, they seemed to really love it. I am really not a big fan of it either, but it seems to be pretty popular for this genre :( . Maybe I can improve it or lighten the effect on it. The pr8 mkII is not bad for the money at all. It added the extra channels I needed and haven't had a problem with it. My Alesis IO|26 has caused more problems than anything (not very good drivers yet- lots of clicks and audio drop outs). As for the recording on not so expensive equipment, SHHHHHH! don't tell my clients that! they think everything I have is super expensive haha. Thanks everyone!
