Firstly for all those non-Aussies and Aussies that dont listen to Triple J I'll give you some background. JJJ is a national youth broadcaster that is big on helping new talent. It runs a comptition called unearthed which has started many big carrers (Grinspoon and Killing Hidie are the most well know). Basicly it goes to a different sate each time, unsigned artist send in a demo with info and a pic and the choose the best one (or two or three sometimes). This artist/band then get recorded by Triple J in a 'proper' studio by one of thier engineers/producers. In case you're woundering the JJJ engineers are good, one of them has been asked to do the next Strokes album! This song is then put on high rotation for 2 weeks, goes onto a unearthed compilation CD and the band/artist is heavily supported by the station in the future. My good that was long winded but needed :D

So it's my states turn and im putting a song in. Its an old one but the only realy completed. I'l admit the recording is crap and the vocals arent the best in the world but i'd like some opinion on if you think we've got a chance. Part of me thinks that we can realy do this and part of me thinks we dont have a chance. Honest opinions but theres no need for insults unless you have something constructive to say or some advice.
Heres the link:

The song is Decal.

Mono?

It sounds like the the mp3 is mono. I could be wrong though :)
It sounds like a fun up bit tune. The vocal is under the guitars so it's hard to listen to.
is this mono

OH ye! is there a way you can remix it? ;)

I wish there was but i dont have the time or facilities, maybe i could do an update with just guitar and vocal. Does that sound like a good idea? Or maybe i could re do the guitars and vocal and layer them over the original?

how about...

redo it, post it, have a poll on which one to send in ;)
also may be you can colaborate with someone here on bbs
it's a long shot but you never know. Someone might get excited at the prospect of his project being played on the radio.

It would be great to collaborate but i have to send it away next week. I think i might do a second version with just guitars and vocals and send both versions in.
Can anyone give me some tips as to how i can improve the mix just from a stero file (using logic gold)?
I have a copy of the data without the vocals from pro tools le on a mac but im on a pc using logic. Is is possible to transfer the files?
What do you think of the vocals? I think they are probably the week point of the song (not including maxing). Do you guys think they're good enough? (the track is 2 years old and his ability has improved)
I'd rather hear from people who like this kind of music. If you dont like the song and its not you're style anyway thats fine but i dont need negative comments when you wouldnt like the song no matter how good it sounded.
As always thanks.

Please vote

Even if you cant be bother writing a response could you please just vote, it only takes a couple of seconds :)

hey!!!

I think you posted enough to know not to bump ;)

People will vote and responde if they are interested but bumping makes them mad.

Anyway, don't mean to bash you. I don't realy care if you bump it but think if everyone tryed to do it. :(

You should defenatly be able to transfer the tracks from mac.
someone correct me but a wav file is wav file on any platform.

You should try anything to improve on the original. Specialy if you know you can improve and you know how. Even if you don't what do you have to loose? I would say go for it. Resing it, rerecord it whatever. See whitch one you like better and send it. Or all of them. Don't obsess about it to much. have fun
I'll shut up now :)

cheers

What I thought

Decal has a nice groove to it. Musically, it's a fairly nice song. It's a style I tend to like.

I wish I could hear the lead vocal better. Granted I'm listening on very cheap headphones, but it sounds quite fuzzy. I'd like it a bit more clean. I think the singer has a fine voice.

From what I could hear, lyrically it was just another song. Nothing I haven't heard a bunch of times before.

I believe I heard some pitch issues with the high harmony at about :40 and (I think) again at 1:26.

So will it win a contest? I wouldn't bet on it - but who knows?

Go ahead and try.

Listen to Anything or Everything

please listen to anything and everything - same link, different song- and tell me what you think. Do you prefer it, think is got a better chance?

I think its a poor recording of a pretty good song. I f the contest is for song writing, go ahead and submit it. You've got as good a chance as the next guy. If this song was done in real studio it could be killer!

Yeah they go completely on the song not the recording quality. From the feedback ive been getting on chat from people who listen to ths station it does seem it could win.

They may say they totally go on the song but they can't help but be influenced negatively by bad sound. For whatever reason this recording sounds pretty distorted and the voice isn't clear enough at all. Especially if they're going by the song they need to hear the voice. I think it could be a good song and you should redo it but I think this is too distorted to properly represent your song.

Well ive decided to send in Decal and also put in an acoustic version of it. I'll just have to hope for the best. I'll let you know if i win.

Its a good song played with lots of energy, drums and guitar are well played, especially the solo near the end. But the distortion is a problem and it is in mono. The vocals are the weakest part but that could be remedied by taking care with the recording. And if the singer guy has improved since then.......:)

Overall, a strong song, worthy of a much better recording. It should go quite far.

Okay. I think it would do well, considering this sounds a lot like a radio hit type thing. The problems are as follows. I know it's a demo, but nowadays demos have a somewhat higher standard as far as sound quality goes. I think it all depends on who's reviewing them, so if he's got the old mentality still left, and he can appreciate a good song, no matter the recording quality, then I think you have good chances. Of course, your version has energy, since it sounds more live, so I'm not sure. The other problem for me was the stop-n-go thing. I think you go a little overkill on that. If you ditched every other stop'n'go on the chorus, I think it would be less of a problem. On the other hand, that is the thing that grabs the attention and can possibly make it a hit. Because hits become hits usually because people remember the 'hook', and I think this is the hook of the song. I'm just babbling, but it's what I think. I'd suggest, if you can, you could try recording the song again. And only do the 2nd and 4th stop thing, or 1th and 3th one. I hope that made some sense.

Yup totally agree with above posts. It's mono, too much distortion, vocals are hiding somewhere in Siberia (and I miss them, hmph). I also agree that it's a solidly written track, and hey if that's all the stationis going on (and Lt. Bob is right about them not being able to help but be affected by lack of quality, I couldn't) then you got a shot. Hey good luck, and I'd also love to hear the acoustic version.

Say Cold Ash,
Whatever happened with those "dums" you wanted for letting go? I did some and put 'em up on nowhere but never heard back from you. I kinda like to take 'em off but was wondering if they were of any use to you.

Just thought id let you know that ive put my CD in and entries close today. So far there are a total of 175 entries ( and Melbourne got over 3000! for thier unearthed) I get the feeling because its now state by state they could unearth 2 or 3 artits/groups. I did a CD cover/back cover/CD label with original pics (the CD cover can be found below) and a bio with some pics on the CD which hopefully give us a bit of an advantage there. I think the teack does sound better in CD format. I'll let you guys know if i win (and the Australians should find out 5th June if you listen to Triplle J)
Thanks for all your feed back and keep it coming.
