Ras Lidj (the artist i produce) is opening up for 50 cent at club dynasty in greenvile, nc on thursday.

CLUB DYNASTY — 507 N. Greene St. Greenville, NC

anyone in the area come show us some love.

good things happen to you when you get your demo ready in time for spring/summer bookings.

that's tight

shit, i wish i could be there. i have been reading your posts for some time now and i remember when you were posting about getting ready for the spring. hard work is paying off ha? are any of your new artists going to do anything or do you have them on ready reserve?

BMI is having a showcase in atlanta. I'm trying to get 3 tracks ready in time to have a chance at that.

they are making progress but not nearly as fast as i thought. they started out as 3 members but now are down to 2 because the 3rd couldn't get to the studio consistently and showed up to drunk/high to spit.

i don't mind if you smoke or drink as long as you can make it hot when you jump on the mic.

yo

can you give me some detail about this showcase? i'm two hours from atlanta.

i don't really know a whole lot about it myself.

its only open to BMI affiliates and they are requesting hip-hop and r&b artists.

i figure, if i can get their tracks ready in time, i'll submit them and worry about the details later.

Good job CROSS...

Sounds like you're getting off to a good start... I hope things pop for you.

Keep it up...

Didn't you post a link to this cat or of some of your other work?
Post it up again if ya don't mind...

i don't mind if you smoke or drink as long as you can make it hot when you jump on the mic.

worst show ever!!!

the club owner had seen Ras Lidj perform to a DAT when he opened for Mobb Deep.

he'd heard from another club owner in greensboro about Ras Lidj's live shows and wanted him to perform live.

we agreed to do the live show (for more money of course) and I went down (i normally don't go anymore) since 50 is the hottest right now.

We got a writeup (2 sentences) in the local paper within the 2 page article about 50 coming to perform and all the police security and club security invovled.

when we were hitting clubs with 100-200 people the band that we use (a DC go-go band) was talking about how one day we would blow up.

when we were hitting clubswith 300-400 people coming to see us, the band started talking about how they were going to go on the road with us wherever we went come hell or high water.

then, they show up 3 hours late so we didn't get to run thoroughly through our set before the official sound check. many of you know, the opening band gets no love unless they love themselves by showing up early because the sound man is there to get the 120 decibels for the main attraction and could care less about the opening act.

then, in front of the tour manager, DJ , and one of the like 10 dudes 50 had on stage with him, the band pulled the gank move and tried to hit us up for more money per musician to play. complaining that the room for 50 had deli meat, water, and snacks and we didn't provide them with food.

then, when 50 decided he wasn't going to show up on time, the band tells us that if we don't go onstage at 11 as planned then f**k us and 50.

then when 50's tour bus pulls in and the band is on stage and the DJ for 50 is holding Ras Lidj's CD in his hand, the drummer gets up from the drum set and says f**k this i'm going home.

the promoter for the show had to talk the drummer into playing.

then, we get onstage to a sea of high school, college (East Carolina U.) and grown a$$ peoples all in their best throwback jersey and jerysey-skirt gear, the band decided after the 2nd of 4 songs that they are going to play their own material.

the bass player takes the SM58 off the stand swings the bass around backward and they go into their own GO-GO music.

now this crowd is there to see Hip-Hop. maybe they will tolerate Dancehall, maybe they will tolerate Dancehall to a slightly GO-GO beat, but they don't know anything about nor did they pay their $30 (in advance, i heard it was $60 at the door) to hear DC music.

there are a few ladies in the crowd still bouncing but most of the crowd stops and is just looking at us like we are some kind of idiots.

Ras Lidj doesn't want to embarrass the situation further by having a public confrontation on the stage, so he bogarts the situation and starts free-styling over their music. the crowd starts dancing again because they think its part of the show.

the band switches to another song thats even more GO-GO pocket oriented. they start doing a call and response...
hey ladies... is that p*ssy real good girl. and the women in the club are looking at them like they have spinach between their teeth.

then they start chanting... we want 50, we want 50 and the front 4-5 rows on the left hand side start doing the get-your-a$$-off-stage wave like they are on showtime at the apollo.

at any rate, the band was fired and we didn't give them any money for the show. the owner hates my man with a passion and was overheard by my boy (who goes to the shows with me to get at them shorties) saying "them DC n*gg*$ aint sh*%, I shouldn't even pay them mutha-f*cka$ for that bull sh*%.

i'm sure 50' tour manager and DJ dumped our CD straight into the garbage. i know i would have.

crab ass fools... that could have been the start of a good spring/summer season. instead we've got to rebuild his reputation on short money because word gets around.

whoa

:eek:man, when you make it, and someone asks what was your most embarrassing moment in the buisness, you will not let them down.
hopefully then you'll be able to look back and laugh.:) way to keep your head up brah. hang in there we are all counting on you in here, you are one of the most established cat's in here. do your thing dog, do your thing.

when its 2 steps forward and 1 step back i'm ok, i can take it because i'm a man, but when dudes just sabotage your situation because they are so short sighted and selfish thats just something i never anticipated.

in hindsight i should have known better. this band use to be the backing band for ginuwine before he blew up. when he made it, he left them behind. after he left i joined the band for like 2 years, but i left because i didn't feel like they had any clear purpose. then i started hiring them to do shows for my boy.

so now that i've had a couple of hours sleep, i can start gaining some perspective on this and understand my own culpability in this thing so it never happens again.

nothing worse than learning something the hard way!

Learning experience like a muh fucka...

Yo CROSS... Peep my post about the CDR's... Go cop you a nice grip of those and do a mixed cd promo disc of your boy and his real skills. Maybe some frestyle shit over some other cats tracks or something (anything). 80 minutes of showing ass type shit... That way when when this shit comes back to bite your ass you got some materials on the street to back your story or something... Plus ya know when that one fool at the mall tells you he heard your dude sucked and got boo'd at the 50 show... Break it down and shoot him a promo. Sour milk to the cornbread...

Least you have been there... I know the bullshit is still coming for me and I'm ready for it to be over right now. It'll be some more bullshit for you to deal with... You got the right attitude... At least that issue is in the past. On to the next spot doc...

You still started out on a good note... Peace.

north carolina......... you ever heard of SUPASTISTION........ ill cat out of nc just dropped a BANGING cd....

the promoter and club owner for the show called today to thank us for extending our set list. he said he got positive feedback from people about the opening band the next day, but was still pissed at having to talk our drummer into playing and thought it was unprofessional of the drummer to act that way.

we were only supposed to be on for 15 minutes but we played for 30.

after talking to him for a minute, it became apparent that he thought that we had given the band the last 2 songs on purpose because they didn't know the rest of our music and he needed for us to continue playing in order to extend the time.

he said he'd like to work with us in the future.

when we told him that we had fired the band, he told us that he thought that was a good idea.

sunshine on a cloudy day

man, if you perform for them again, that should be great. why do you carry a band instead of the instrumentals on disk? is it cause the band can adjust to on the spot changes? when you perform live you lik to perform (live)?

i prefer to play live all the time, but sometimes its just not practical and holding a band together (as you see) is some difficult sh*t.:

for clubs we normally play to an Instrumental CD unless the club caters to a roots reggae type of crowd in which case we play live and linger longer on the songs that have more reggae/dancehall elements to them.

for festivals we almost always play live. there's something about being outdoors in the spring or summer in front of a crowd that has been able to listen to a variety of music and being able to judge their mood and try to find a way to help them catch the vibe. once you get them where you need them to be, you let it marinate.

for one festival in west virginia I knew there would be a plethora of caucasians in attendance so I taught the band a reggae version of nirvana's teen spirit that went over big.

oh, and there was another festival where we went into our Ghanja Weed song that we only do live and have never recorded. the police (near kentucky u) were standing off stage with this look in their eyes and people couldnt let loose. we were like.... OK... we aren't goint to linger on this groove. you can't do that with a CD.

cross

man, you have been through some interestings events. keep us posted on the atlanta trip.
