Open back cabs - just a mount for the speaker or tone shaping?

Hi all,

I'll just ask this straight up.

I can either buy a mesa 1 x 12 open back cab, or just buy the speaker (Celestion Black shadow MC-90 ) for a lot less money and put it in my old Blues Jr open back cab.

Anyone want to predict how much difference in sound there will be between these two scenarios?

Cheers,
FM

Not a lot. But some. Probably not worth the extra money, but maybe. Does that help?

I'd get the speaker and put it in the cab you already have...I'll bet it'll sound awesome and you won't regret it. If you spend a lot of money you'll always wonder what could have been with less.

Or build a cabinet the size of the mesa if your smaller cab doesn't work out. The last cab I built ran me about $25.00 for materials for a 1x12 combo.

Both cabs being a 1x12 and open-back, there probably won't be much difference in sound.

I'd get the speaker and change the open back cab into a closed back with a removeable back. Then see which sound you like best; closed or open back. Good luck.
