Diy guitar cabs. What wood would you use?

Hi everyone,

I've been doing my research and decided to build my own guitar cabs.
Here are my plans:
  • 212 cab with v-30s
  • 212 cab with celestion blues
  • 412 cab with a mix of v30s and t75

The first 212 i want to model it after an orange cab with a semi open back, support beams around the back of the cab

the second cab is molded after a fender cab with support beams around the back too

and the third cab is modeled after a mesa rec stack and i'm still figuring out a proper
place to place the support beams (not just for support but whether or not they really affect the tone)

I have the plans laid out, complete with dimensions, wiring, and sealing off the 412, but no matter where i look i can not find the types of wood used for the baffle, cab, and supports.

If anyone can tell me the type of wood used it would be greatly appreciated (sorry, no mdf please :) )

Load them with Neodymium speakers, and build the cabs out of balsa wood!

Actually, that is something I really want to do, to see how light a cab can be, and to see if it soundx as crappy as everybody says (without actually knowing for sure,) it would be.

I was thinking birch plywood 3/4"

THis is the same thing i wanted to see by building the 412 first, and if i don't like it i'll place the new speakers in my other cab :)

Yet, if you build a cab out of the same wood and to the same specs as other companies, i feel like it would sound the same. Just wholeeeee lot cheaper

So pine for the fender cab? :)
Ill probably end up going for Baltic birch doe the rest, I just wish I could find a site with more info on each cab

But are your opinions? Do you think a cab that's built solid, with the same specs as the original, sound the same?

I did some research a while back and found this information quite easy to find.

An often used mix is a pine box, with a birch plywood backpanel and a chipwood (not the cheap kind) front panel.

As Chris suggested, a mixture of pine and birch or like the others noted, pine for that fender tone. If u can find aged pine, even better.

You can find all kinds of specs on different sizes Marshall 2 x 12 cabs, Fender 2 x 12 cabs etc. Bogner have some kind of oversized 2 x 12 cab that I'm curious about.

Another interesting tip I got, from a guy specialised in refurbishing Fender amps, is to get a good 15" speaker and build it into as small a cab possible. I haven't heard it, but it's an interesting notion.

I'm still not too sure on what to use for the baffle.

Though tomorrow i'm running sound at a local venue, and the band playing (gaza, a metal band) their guitarist built every cab for him, the other guitarist, and the bassist. I'll post some details if he'll give me some :)
