I bought some rigid fiberglass several months ago, but a bunch of other projects cropped up and pushed the DIY acoustic panels project to the back burner. The fiberglass has been resting comfortably in my garage for quite a while now, and just a couple weeks ago I noticed that it was starting to stink.

I can't be SURE, of course, that it's the fiberglass that stinks since I'm not inclined to stick my nose into those little glass strands while inhaling deeply, but the glass is the most likely culprit.

Anybody else out there had problems with stinky fiberglass, and if so, were you able to freshen it up somehow before bringing it into your home studio?

is it still wrapped up? mold growing on it? if its been damp where you are for a while...i'm sure that could be the problem....take them out and let them air out....squirt some febreeze on them and wipe'm down.......maybe that'll help.

i febreeze my panels every week! keeps the stink out of the fabrics. I would also guess mold is growing on yours.

lol so i'm not the only febreezer here ....makes me feel a little better :D

I dont thing fiberglass is capable of mold- that is, mold needs an organic source to feed on (paper, wood, etc.) and i'm pretty sure there is nothing in Fiberglass that qualifies- I've seen mold on the pink batts but only on the kraft paper face.

and with the winter the midwest has had....i bet its pretty rank. lol...

Yeah, if the sun ever shines again in Maryland, I'll take them outside and lay them on the driveway for a day to see if that helps. I don't know about the febreeze, though. Aren't you concerned that the chemicals in it might react badly with the fiberglass over time?

i really doubt it would react with the fiberglass. If it does, I can just build more panels, and learn a lesson, but until then, ill take the risk.

chlorox i would worry about more than febreeze

I was actually pondering about the stink that may be created in my tracking room when im recording bands, the febreeze idea looks like the best option =)

Thanks
