Welcome to the jungle.
Well actually Musician's Friend's cheapest stands are no-name and I know are crap.

But Has any one used this kind of mic stand before?

These On-Stage Stands are a great price ($99 for 6 + free ship / gig bag).
The only thing made by On-Stage that I have used is a guitar stand, so that's not much to go by.

I doubt they'll hold up a large tube condenser, but I want them mainly for miking drums w/ 57's and shotgun condensers.

All the stands I have now are K&M, Atlas, and Ultimate. But some of my stands are 15+ years old, so some are getting worn.

I have a couple of them. They are ok for light use. Very important to position them correctly, or they will tip over. I've heard from folks who have stripped the tighteners, but I haven't had that problem with mine.

Yeah, there is no counterweight on the boom. It will hold a LDC if you don't extend it all the way. You can also make sure the mic is above one of the legs. Or make your own counterweight.

Just get a few 5-10 pound weights and drop them down the center tube for the heavier mics. I did it and have never had a knocked over stand since.

Ha! good idea.... now wher's that old Joe Weider set....

That's exactly what I do when using an LDC. I often use LDC's for overheads and I'll sick some cast iron wieghts on them so they never tip. Pretty cool!

bingo. i bought one of those 6pks a while back and they do fine. they're not the greatest stands in the world, and i've used worse.

be sure to extend the boom over one of the tripod legs and put a 10lb weight over the center tube. you'll be fine.

the biggest beef i have with these stands is that you can not get them placed exactly where you want em, and they don't always stay where you crank em down. but whaddya expect for $18 stands?

cheers,
wade

I bought a couple of those sets. Some for live work and some for studio. I have had a few of the tighteners get stripped, but they're fixable. The stands are lightweight, so you have to be careful with positioning. But if you need a bunch of stands cheap, this is the way to go. Wouldn't hurt you to buy one or two really good stands for the expensive or heavy mics though. Plus, the bag comes in handy if you gig at all. I keep speaker stands in mine! ;)

I picked up a DR Pro stand with a boom at GC. They had them on sale but I don't rememebr what I paid now. This stand is much better than the On stage stands I have. I'm not at all impressed with On Stage stands. They will only hold up in very light use, at least that has been my experience with them.

I've got some of the On-Stage stands and think they're worth the price. I've been using a few live every weekend for the past six months and they've held up quite well. I've got some at home in "the studio" and they work alright. I don't extend the boom all the way out for heavy mics though. I actually just ordered six more. It's a pretty good deal.

I've also got some of the MF brand stands and they just flat out suck ass.

I've had one 6 pack set for about 3 years and bought another set last summer. They hold up reasonably well if you don't over-torque them. I've had 2 of them stripped out. Only because someone wanted to "help" tear down after a show and didn't loosen before folding down the boom. I use a 10 pound weight on it when using condensors in the studio. Works great. Doesn't mean I would put a $3000 mic on it (if I had one). And yeah, the bag is really handy but the zipper will eventually break. I would buy them again if necessary.

They look similiar to one of my boom stands. It doesn't hold up very well. Like someone said, it doesn't always stay where you left it. I had to tinker with it a lot just to get it to hold an ECM8000 in place and not slowly droop down.

What's wrong with the MF stands? I got the 10 pack and they're every bit as good (or bad ;) ) as the On-Stage ones, and you get 4 more stands free.

I have one of those On-Stage stands and it works OK. It will hold up an LDC if you don't extend the boom completely. The counterweight idea is a good one - I'll have to try that. Before I got this one and my KMD stand, all I had was an old "Realistic" stand - now that one was truly a POS!

I just ordered those yesterday! I already have 6 or 8 of them and they work fine for studio use. That's why I ordered more. Highly recommended!

GAFFA TAPE! my best friend...
If its on stage then just gaffa tape the tripods to the floor? in a studio (if its yours, you probably dont wanna stick a loadof gaffa tape on your floor) Then put weights to counteract it. You cant really go wrong with $18 mic stands and a gig bag!!

I orderd some the other day and they should arrive tomorrow.
We'll see how they "stand up". :D

I agree.

I bought a MF ten-pack and gave them to a bunch of duffers a year ago that were reorganizing a band they were in back in the 60's (40 years ago!). They haven't broken any of the stands, but they DO have to stop playing every 25 minutes to go take a leak! ;)

I have their keyboard stands, mic stands, and guitar stand and NOT one problem yet.

Man, I got ripped to shreds here a year or two ago when I suggested them to someone who was looking for a cheap solution for mic stands. I got called all kinds of names and accused of trying to sell people shitty equipment. I guess the people who want to use $100 stands to hold up their $50 SM57s aren't around here as much anymore.
