When I plug my guitar, keyboard or whatever into my line in on my soundcard I only get one channel. When I plug into the mic jack I get both channels but the sound isnt very good. Is this because I am using the factory card and need a better one? Or maybe something is set wrong.

dude im having the SAME EXACT problem ..im using a Soundblaser 128 .i just bought a the M-audio Delta 44 and im waiting on it to get here..im ganna see if its any better :)

dude, your line in probably is STEREO and the jacks you try to plug in to it possibly are MONO. maybe the mic in is MONO too.

when you want to plug in guitars or whatever you need at least a MIXER or PRE AMP or SOUNDCARD or POD/GHISMO/V-AMP with dedicated guitar or whatever INPUTS. read a bit?

hmm... well this is wierd.. i run a normal 1/4th guitar cable from my guitar to the line in with a 1/8th inch stereo converter and it plays mono... BUT when i stick that same set up in my mic in... it records in STEREO?! ..mabey its just my line in?..mabey its only MONO?

The 1/4" to 1/8" is probably Stereo to Stereo. What you need to get is a 1/4" Mono to 1/8" Stereo. The sound card is only reading the Ring(Left) and Sleeve(Ground) contacts. The Mono to Stereo converter plug will bridge the Ring (Left) contact with the Tip (Right) contact, pre-soundcard.

I think you are a bit confused. When you say about the guitar cable, "it plays mono," you mean it appears on only one side of a stereo track -- comes out of only one speaker? Well, that's because you've taken a mono signal and sent it to only one side of the stereo jack. You've probably recorded a stereo track which has its left half panned hard left and its right half panned hard right. So one is all guitar and the other is silence, and hence the stereo image of the guitar is full left or full right. Nothing weird at all about it.

Then when you say about the mic, "it records in STEREO?!", you mean that the playback sound now comes out of both speakers? Well, again, that's not weird. The mic in is mono so you probably recorded a mono track. If you record a mono track and play it back, by default it is panned to the center, meaning upon playback, 50% is played through the right and 50% through the left, so the stereo image is dead center.
