Hi Everyone,

I'm just starting out with home/PC recording to rehearse and record voice-over work. Right now, my modest setup is as follows:

- Electro-Voice Dynamic Mic (to be upgraded to Rode NT1000)
- dbx 286A mic preamp and processor
- Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop w/ ESS Maestro 2E sound card (sound card to be upgraded soon)
- Cool Edit 2000

For some reason, when I record I can only hear my voice in my left headphone (L channel), but when I play it back, it is in both ears. Could this have something to do with the way I've got everything connected? If so, here are the basics:

- Mic plugs into 286A via XLR connector.
- 286A plugs into sound card LINE IN via a jerry-rigged cable. The cable proper has RCA plugs on each end... on the 286A side, I've got a 1/4" phono plug adaptor with one stripe... on the soundcard LINE IN side I've got a miniplug adaptor with one stripe.

The 286A can use either balanced or unbalanced, apparently, and I have been told that my soundcard is defintiely unbalanced. That's why I got the "one stripe" adaptors to make my cable. Was that wrong?

Beside the fact that I can only hear the left channel while recording, I'm also having a difficult time making it so I can hear the headphones loud enough. If I turn the mic preamp gain up enough to hear well while recording, the playback is crazily loud. Any ideas?

As you can surely tell, I am a novice at this and any help is enormously appreciated.

Thank you,

MercyMe

sounds like mono plugs...and also,a microphone is a mono signal....unless you split the output from the preamp into two signals, but you still will need stereo plugs.......
