Anybody here copyright songs? It use to cost $20.00 when I started copyrighting songs at the Libraray of Congress in Washington, D.C. in 1979.
Then the fees kept going up, my fourth volume back in 2006 cost $45.00
That's the bad news. The good news is that now you can do it online for $35.00.
It's pretty painless. You create an account with a User Name and Password and then they email you from ecobeta@loc.gov and ask you to respond with your first name, last name, and user name, not your password.
Then your account is activated. At this point you can register a claim and pay $35.00 by credit card and you have 45 days to upload a zip file with as many songs as you want and you will be protected.
The only limitation is the upload time. 30 minutes.
I've been told that a zipped folder of about 60MBs (roughly 12 songs) takes about 15 minutes.
I'm going to try to upload about 20 in my first shot at it.
I'll let you know how I make out.
Some helpful hints I've picked up lately:
1. You don't need to re-register if you make minor changes to a song previously registered. Even if you add a verse. Only if you substantially change the song.
2. You need to acknowledge a previously registered song that is included in a new work. Example - in 2006 I registered a musical that had 4 previously registered songs. I made mention of that and it's right there on my link in the website for that volume.

If anyone here has any interest in learning more, I'd be glad to walk you through the process.
PM me for further details
