Is MIDI only associated and used in conjunction with computer based (DAW) systems
as opposed to stand-alone multitrack units?

I figured I could skip this chapter as it wouldn't apply to a studio-in-a-box set up.

No...

...midi sequencing has been around a very long time... Ataris had sequencing s/w, as did early Macs....

There are also hardware versions of midi sequencers.........
 
MIDI is a way to control and sync any device that has a midi port.
