I think my question is a little stupid but maybe somebody have tried this and could tell me if it works. I´m planning to buy a SP B1 or MXL V69g as a vocal mic besides that I will use it for hihat micing  Yeah, I know there are another options for the job but the budget is low, it will be better for me if I can find one mic that can be decent for both tasks. Right now I´m using a pair of MXL603 as OH, sm57 for snare and AT25 for kick. I would like to know what you think about and which one would you recommend??.

Thanks
TS

You're not getting enough hi-hat in your OH & snare mics?

Hi hat are good enough on my 4 mic setup, but I want more "control" and hihat definition. I think it could add a lot to my drum mix.....

hh mics always give me grief, i do alot of heavy hitters and hh just turns into a wierd snare mic with a quickness. works good for funk though often. ive never tried a ldc near a hat for the soul purpose of getting the hat alone. seems like youd get alot of rack, snare, and crash with an ldc near there.

That´s true. Maybe I´ll stay with the 4 mic setup I´m used to.
What if I quit on my 1 mic two tasks idea and focus only on the hihat. Do you think that a ECM8000 is gonna work??.

Cheap...cheap.....really cheap.... :D

If you want more hi-hat, I would generally recommend moving the overheads in closer to the hat. You could do a pseudo Glyn John's method and put the overheads directly over the drummer's shoulder's and aim them at the snare / hat, making sort of an inverted triangle with the snare serving as the "tip."

Using a dedicated mic on the hat won't necessarily improve clarity or definition. In fact, it tends to create even more potential phasing issues which can blur some of the cymbals.

That said, many great engineers have used hat mics to great effect. Keep in mind, though, that these are generally guys who have put in years and years of time in to getting this stuff right.

i agree with chess, try aiming the mic from beside the drummers left shoulder about 2 feet across the hat at the rack tom. that does ok for me alot with rock/punk stuff and i use mxl603s also

Ok, I agree with you. I just wanted to have different thoughts about hihat micing. I have the idea that doing that will give me "pro" results....lol
