Personally i like the first one better. More open, more in your face. I'm always amaze at the clarity of your recordings. Congrats.

Thanks, Marcadiablo, I think the compression lost some of the snap on the guitar.

I did find the panning on the vox a little distracting

Yeah, sorry about that, boz, I tried to deal with that after the fact by cloning the vocals and trying to pan the other way. The problem came about by recording in stereo with two condenser mics. They are a bitch to balance. The waveform doesn't always tell the whole story, so you can't do it visually. Thanks for the listen.

I agree about the clarity, you can hear the nuances of every single instrument. The only problem I hear with this mix has already been mentioned. By the way, why did you chose to use stereo miking for vocals? Just curious.

i love the flute and harmonica, and i NEVER like harmonica!!! they're sitting perfectly in the mix, and as everyone has already said, the clarity here is remarkable. :)

the first track definitely sounds better than the second, but the guitar/flute vamps at 0:56 and 1:50 seem to have some pumping going on. other than that, i think everything sounds very good.

on the 2nd track, the pumping seems more severe and also occurs more frequently. also, it generally sounds like a lot of life got sucked out of it by that compressor. i vote #1.

It's just a habit I got into. You know, the more is better mentality. I'm probably way off. A pro would never use two mics, right? Here's what I use.

An Apex 435 and a ST2020 both cheapos but I'm getting a decent sound.

No room treatments or carpet on the hardwood floor. (A real no no)

Thanks, drossfile. I'm going to stay away from compression for a while. Let somebody do it who knows what they're doing. There is a Master Compression Limiter that I heard about with only one knob. One knob is good.:)

I absolutely love the harmonica and flute together. It sounds great.
I'll offer one dissenting opinion about the compression. I think the whole mix sounds better compressed, EXCEPT the acoustic guitar does lose some dynamics. But overall the mix sounds better to me, more pleasing to the ear on the compressed version.

Thanks, guitar zero. I'll try to send all tracks except the guitar through the compressor and see what happens. First I'm going to add some slide guitar fills that thankfully were done by someone a lot better than me. I hope to repost soon.:)
