One almighty Condenser Mic

I'm going to try and track Bass, Guitar, and Vocals for some Songs of mine. I will just play along with drum loops/samples to keep it in time and throw on the drum tracks later, or at least hoping that should work.

Right now I just want to be able to record Bass, Guitar (mostly electric but maybe some acoustic), and vocals with no regrets. So I'm thinking of getting one MD421, a Sansamp RBI, and a yet to be decided vocal Condenser that can be used for other stuff down the line.

Spending less would be better right now, but I'm willing to spend up to around $1,000 if it will make me happy with my recordings. At the same time I don't need to spend money just to spend money.

I'll just let you throw out what ever Model/Brand you want.

It would be primarily for recording male vocals, I'm a little bit of both a baritone and a Tenor. My voice is a little nasal and has a deep airy sound at the same time. One of my friends once told me I had a voice that sounded like a combination of Kurt Cobain, Mark Sandman of Morphine, and Gordon Gayno of the Violent Femmes if that makes any sense.

As far as the way I sing. Though it can vary a lot, I have picked up some similarities to Kurt Cobains singing style as it’s what I grew up on. Melody's I make up can be seen as being somewhat somber or in a tragically romantic style. Just imagine a field hauler mixed with an opera singer singing music that is not pop but instead something that try's to trick pop music into being something else, so there is a little pop in there just to fool the bastards. There's more to it that that, but It seems like I get pegged with that description from time to time.

I hope that gives you an Idea of what I do, enough anyways to share your Microphone opinions for me. Again I will spend up to around $1,000 if it's worth it, but a guy can always hope for a cheaper solution that’s just as good. The Pre Amp I will be using will be the On-Board pre's of the Akai DPS24.

The NTK is a great tube mic with a bit of a darker tonality and I see it selling around $499.
Either way would give you money left over to consider a nice pre-amp.

Have you used the NTK? It's one of the brightest mics I've ever owned. Spitty and essy as hell. Nice on some stuff, but I didn't like it much on vocals.
 
Check out the Pearlman TM-1. It's about $400 over your price limit, but it's a world class mic that will likely hold its value.

For $1,000 I'll build you a stellar mic....
 
No such thing as a "one mic do all", Brauner Phantom C comes the closest from my experience, got one over the "almighty" 87

Pearlman

I got one and it ROCKS! So sensitive, but not noisy. Outstanding sound. Not near as 'essy' sounding as the NTK, not anywhere in the same league. The Pearlman has a great midrange and just sits in the track perfectly. Doesn't really need any eqing to sit. I still do a little de-essing on it, but Dave Pearlman has a simple mod that he will provide you with instructions for if you want to reduce the highs in the mic, and if you want to get rid of the mod it takes even less time. GREAT PURCHASE! I've never heard a mic that would keep its head above the mix where you can hear it, but making the track sound like an album at the same time. I actually like mine as a drum overhead too! I used a KSM32 for the left side of the kit (ride side) and the Pearlman for the right side (hi-hat) in omni. Sounds spacious! I don't believe in matched stereo mics. Seems stupid to me...lol. Recording isn't clinical like using steralized syringes. I'm sure each of our ears don't hear completely identically either. Anyway, love the TM1! It does breathy vocals like nothing I've ever sang in before. I used to think the KSM32 was great on vocals and the TM1 killed it.
