Lee,
Thanks for putting them up. The only issue I have with them is they don't deal with my no name level of equipment.
Thanks though it was interesting esp the colouration stuff (let's face it most tube/valve heads are into coluration whether they know it or not).

I could just as easily say that Santa Claus was like Bill Clinton because they both have white hair. Nothing political there either...unless you want to get into the politics of Santa Claus :) .

G.

Not me, that would be more volatile than either Bush or Clinton.

Hey most definitely. I never like to put up things that preach gospel (like links), but I figure if it puts another angle on how we see things, then it would be cool to throw the idea up there to think about for a second.

:D

IMHO, the charts are misleading, at best. Think about mikes, for example. There are many different ways that mikes deviate from "transparency". The polar pattern varies, on purpose. Non-omni mikes generally have proximity effect, which is complex enough and a function of distance. Then there are on-axis frequency response variations, such as HF bumps. Then there is the multi-parameter space of off-axis coloration. Then there are differences in transient response. To lump all of that stuff into one axis, or even two, and then put "transparent" as one extreme with some collection of "semi-colored" mikes in the middle where the axes cross is less than useless to me. I think Einstein said something like "explanations of nature should be as simple as possible, but no simpler." These charts portray things as way simpler than they are, which is a disservice, and worse than having no such chart.

Cheers,

Otto

Not to mention where and how they were evaluated to place them in these catagories. The average home reccer WILL have good/cheap pre-amps. mixers, rooms, monitors in every possible combination imaginable. The only way to select a mic you will like in your situation is to try it. Hard to do, but that is reality. An opinion of any mic based on experience of the home recorder is ballpark at best and totally inaccurate at worst.

Mate there are several homerecorders on his bbs that I would trust far more than a pro. due to perspective, can do-ness and a lack of high flier flab.

All reccos are given, & should be taken, based on evidence supplied currently or previously. Not rep points but reputation & that established in the time honoured way - time.
