A neighbor was looking for info on digital recording. He's got a background in analog recording and a band and great songs to go with it. He paid some studio $100/hr to record 3 of their tunes. They used an ADAT 8 track and then went to some computer format. From which the CD was burned. The levels were off at least 10dB; more like 13dB from my measurements. The drums and bass had zero punch. He's trying to build his own digital workstation and has some capable Win98 systems based on SCSI HDs. 9MB/sec sustained. BTW he recently got a SCSI 4GB HD for $10!! He's shopping for the audio component to add to his PC. And he can isolate recording functions to one platform having many from which to choose. I asked him to check out what I've done on the cheap.
At Amrather Studio I just handed the guy my SG plugged into a POD (I did a quickie selection of parameters) plugged into a Porta-07 plugged into my Gina and recorded a stereo track into Vegas Pro. This was after I took a quick sound check and decided on 0 dB of cut/boost on the Gina card based on the other settings in the chain. Then I played it back and had him record a second stereo track. I mixed these two to a stereo track and normalized the result in Sound Forge. When I played it back, I couldn't help but notice the grin on his face. And I didn't even mess with any compression or EQ. Digital Rules. Sorry. no permission (yet) to release any samples.
