I need a good sampler and sequencer.. I will be getting a new keyboard sometime in the future- either the Motif 8, Triton Pro-X or ASR-88.. probably the Motif from what I've been reading about it.... how are the sequencers and samplers in these boards? Whats the difference between using them and an external piece such as an MPC? I know some producers have for instance a Triton and an MP- is the MPC really necessary?

They both suck ass compared to a computer based sequencer. Is that an option for you?

I agree with Mr. Roadkill. Go computer for a sequencer if you can.

Ok..

I have a computer (PC) only a few months old, plenty of hd space, ram and speed.. what programs would you recommend? I have a few- Cakewalk Music Creator and Sonar, Acid and Reason. Havent gotten around to figuring them out- I fiddled with Acid for a few minutes, but couldnt get it to do what I wanted with a sample... I've used Performer which is cool, but its only for Macs...any recommendations?

I'm using Cakewalk 9 Home Studio, which I bought at surplus through eBay for $60 new a few months ago.

So far, it seems to do its job okay. The MIDI sequencing is straight forward, as is the multitrack digital recording.

i'd suggest computer sequencing too.. personally my favorite is Steinbergs Cubase... i love the gui much better than both the ones available in logic (no matter how you set 'em up... and where's the goddamn piano roll in logic???) and cakewalk...

personally i'd love to get a hardware sequencer though... i HAAAAATTEEEEE using computers... tinsy winsy mouse and stupid keyboard is all you got and everything is put in ugly-windows mode.. oh well...

as for using samples along with the sequencer, steinbergs cubase got a vst sampler available.. i'm using it myself and i'm quite satisfied...

Out of the programs you have I would start with Sonar and see if that works for you. All sequencers do the same stuff for the most part. They just have different interfaces that appeal to different people.

Chris- Maybe you just need a bigger mouse ;)
