Grumpy Mod
There is a violinist who comes around to record stuff.

She hails from Perth (Western Australia). When she was there, she played in a variety of bands, but was never happy with her fiddle sound, particularly when using pickups. So she did a bit of searching around, and eventually found a set-up that worked well for her.

She got herself an Audio Technica AT853a, a microphone that I believe is generally designated as a 'hanging mike', i.e. used in halls to mike up choirs.

However, instead of the wire frame used to position a hanging mike, this has a cradle in which the mike sits, and this cradle then attaches to a conventional mike stand, which is how she uses it for her fiddle on stage.

She brought it around and we did some recordings with it. What an awesome sound!!

Here is a 60 second clip as an example:http://www.box.net/shared/ov2fb3fv48

Note that there is no EQ, no compression, no nothing on this fiddle, other than some reverb.

So I think t myself that having such a mike would be a real handy weapon to have in one's arsenal. So I went searching.

I can find Audio Technica U853 in various configurations on the web, but not the AT853a as designated on the box in which her mike came. Nor can I find any references to the cradle in which the mike sits (either as a separate accessory, or as part of a unit).

Can anyone help?

The U853 designation replaced the AT853, which while now discontinued is by most reports pretty much the same mic.

Ta for that. I had kind of figured that.

What's got me foxed is that I can't find the cradle that you can use with it.

So do I (well Fremantle actually), PM me and I'll see if I know her, give me a couple of band names.

If you have enough money, these are suppose to sound awesome, I say suppose because I can't afford to buy any.

Alan.

Any of these fit the bill?

Thanks for the links.

They were helpful . . . but I have yet to find that danged elusive cradle!

Could you describe the cradle a little more? Is it like the wire frame that it comes with to hang terminated with a threaded adapter? Or did it have a shock mount type thing. L shape, C shape, gooseneck? If you look at the AT853 manual, it has optional accessories. But I wouldn't call it a cradle.

Optional accessory AT8438 for that adapter.

There also the Audix SMT Micro that seems to fit that mic. According to a B&H review anyway.

It's not a shockmount, nor a wire frame.

The trouble with the audio-technica links is that they direct me to an AT home page, rather than the specific page. So I don't get to see what you are referencing.

Here is a link to a picture of the cradle:http://www.box.net/shared/yojm932xhu

You can see the AT853 capsule on the left. Its cable sits in the cradel which is open at the top, and trails out the right.
