I'm going to get a pair of small diaphragm condensors, probably the AT 3031 or 3032's and i'm looking for guidance on what would benefit me more all around, a pair of omni or a pair of cardiod? i know, i should have a pair of both, and i will, but which ones do you find more use out of?

i already have-

AT 4033
AKG D-112
57
58
behringer ecm8000 (mainly for room tuning, have not had a chance to try it on anything)

i will mainly be doing acoustic guitars, drum overheads, percusion, and a few live full orchestras, but i've always used whatever gear the studio i was working for at the time had.

so, A) omni or cardiod

B) Which manufacturer, best deal under $250 each...

thanks!

How about a pair of Octava MC-012's with the three capsules (omni, cardiod and hyper cardiod) and a -10dB attenuator? And at some point in time you can pick up a LOMO M-1 33mm capsule for the 012 and have a nice vocal mic as well.

hmm

Get another ECM8000, which you could then use as a stereo pair for the orchestra..pick up 2 AKG C3000b's, which are nice drum overheads and their darker tone makes them good for strings, which can be bright..and if you have money left, go for a pair of Rode NT1000s, check www.bpmmusic.com, they have AMAZING rode prices..I got my shockmounts for $40 each instead of $80 from musician's friend.

PS if you wanna hear an ECM8000 on guitar, check out the A/B post thingie a few back.

I would definately pick up another ECM for $35 then buy a pair of cardoids.I would seriously consider Bruce"s suggestion.

I love my Octava MC-012's with the 3 interchangeable capsules (Omni, Cardioid, Hypercardioid). And you can't beat 'em for the money!

i never thought about the ecm8000 for actual studio use. even behringer stated that it was only a room tuning mic..... but hey i like that low price suggestion, thanks!

Along with the Behringer you could pick up a pair of Mxl 603's(about $80ea)then for under $200 total you would have a pair of omnis and cardoids.
