Hey,

This a track I recorded and mixed for my band Soundmaze. It's the second mix I've done so far and it's bound to be open to improvement :) Let me know what you think.

High Voltage

PS: The other songs in the player are from my first demo recorded solely with my Edirol R-09HR handheld recorder, a real bitch to multitrack ;)

old school. i like the style, and the mix is good for what you have. are the drums software or live recordings?

Everything seems to be sitting at a nice level. Really nice playing by all. The vocals are maybe a wee bit high or could use some more verb. Overall though it's a great tune! Have NO Fear! :D:D:D:D

Thanks. I played the drums on my TD-12 e-kit and streamed the midi data into Sonar where it was quantitized. This does dehumanize the drums, a compromise I know. This was the only way to properly remove all double triggers and make corrections in the midi editor. I left the velocities intact though. Then I put the midi track back through the module and recorded the audio.

Sounds more like NWOBHM than old school. The vocals seem at odds with the song - like Sparks singing a metal song or maybe The Darkness in their own way.
The e drums are OK for what they are except for the cymbals - including the HH. The panning of the tom runs doesn't sound too realistic.
There's not a lot of meat in the guitars - more fizz than fuzz.
Pretty good songs and arrangement.
Oh, the shreddy squillion note arpeggios solo was a bit anaemic.

Hey, thanks for input guys.
The vocals are a pain and I'm struggling with the reverb, I'm still getting to grasp with this. Our singer's voice is a bit thin and light which is difficult for this music.
I've also noticed the modeled cymbal sounds from my Roland module don't respond well to MP3 compression. They sound better in the uncompressed WAV mix, far less low-fi. I'm planning to use proper multilayered samples for the next demo.

Pretty good mix, man. Like the power metal style. Singer leaves a bit to be desired though....just my humble opinion.

Once the drums are quantized, can't you "humanize them" in sonar by throwing them off just a bit...it fixes the human errors like stuff that's way off, but makes them feel a little more human by messing them up just a little...I don't know sonar, but I'm sure it can do it.

Nice mix. The vocals need more balls or something...I don't know exactly what it could be.

I think I'm going to join the rest in saying that I think the vocals are too light for the song. I just don't feel the punch that the guitars make me want. Also, the falsetto feels out of place, maybe if you went for a more screeching falsetto like Brian Johnson or Robert Plant?

Maybe it's just me but the snare sounds a bit thin, do you have any other snare samples you can use?

I don't know how to do that in Sonar, but it's probably possible. I'm still trying to get the hang of this DAW stuff ;) The only timewise humanizing that I managed was done by the erratic roundtrip latency of my VS-100.

It is hardly my dream sample :) , but it does cut. I did make the newb mistake of using the compressors and EQ of my module which are pretty crappy. That didn't improve matters.

Perhaps I could spike his waterbottle with JD black label :D
