I've been looking into older mixers lately in hopes to get an additional cheap 4-8 channels of decent mic pre's. I've stumbled on these obscure brands. does anyone know anything about them?

Hill Audio
Seck
Wheatstone
D & R

just wondering if time has forgotten something good. Any other obscure brands worth looking into?

I can give you plenty of info on D&R if you want. Personally, it's the better of those you listed by a long shot in my opinion. However, the New Seck EQ's that they are making a pretty nice:)

I am currently on my second D&R console. The thing is certainly no joke at about 2000 pounds, 10 feet long, 88 mono channels with full EQ, 96 faders, 24 busses, automation etc..... The D&R's have a very transparent sound. They don't get in your way at all. What I love though is that the EQ is very musical and functional. I can drop it in line with the preamps and with just a little bit of twisting I can get a fair amount of "color" if I want.

If you really want just channel strips, I have some old ones for sale. Both D&R and Trident (I actually have enough parts to make another complete D&R console).

Thanks for the info on D&R. Do their older smaller mixers hold up to the same standards?

As far as I can tell, yes they do. What models are you looking at? They also make standalone preamps that are still in production. I am not sure if their compressors are though.
