One of my favorite Count Basie quotes;

"If you can't hear the guitar, you are playing too loud."

In response to people wondering why Freddie green didin't amplify his guitar.
Proving that swinging deep and hard was not the same as loud.
Nobody did more with less.

Hoo-ray!& Pfffffffft!

Thank you, thank you thank you.In the immortal words of Lash Larue,"I love you all"And Guitar Junkie,is there something wrong with the tube in my Genesis Mic?Here I thought I had reached the end of Microphone Road and you
inform me that I have merely stumbled on a junction.Being old is bad enough but being old and compulsive really sucks. Is it difficult to switch tubes or can any ordinary moron do it?Is there an old tube home somewhere?
When can I say,"Lay my microphone down"

afterthought

.....and I have an Apogee Duet which I hope qualifies as a pre amp
but will someone hip me to what a plug in does in home recording(and pardon the out dated vernacular but I still think like this)

Tell us more about your music.
Describe what it is most similar to.
Do you want to record a group live, or layer tracks one by one?
or do you just want record the sound of your horn?
Do you want a modern sound or traditional?

the tube affects the tone of the mic and can offer you more voicings, I changed my tube on my 960 in about 3 mins or so, I guess I am a bit of a moron so it's not hard to do it.... If you REALLY like the sound of the stock one then go ahead and leave it, I swapped out the noisy microphonic RF sucking piece of Chinese garbage that came with mine for a vintage RCA of the same type, made in the USA!

preamps are one of those other things that can add different voicing to a mic, and from what I hear the sound quality of that Duet is just dandy, in fact I want one for myself!

But again if you want something to throw money at, that won't send you to jail or give you an STD then mics, tubes and preamps are awesome!

As for plugins they are the effects inside of software like Logic or Garage Band or Cubase or whatever you choose for software, KVR audio has a database of some of the finest sounding effects plugs for either free or for money. But there are so many things you can do with the built in stuff in Logic:D

My life and my tunes

Thank you for the interest.
I construct backgrounds of ballads(and blues)on Band In A Box and drag them into GarageBand or Logic for further editing(Mostly GB because Logic has
destroyed too many brain cells)
I also drag Aebersolds to be used the same way.
I make 3 and 4 part saxophone arrangements using piano sheet music for harmony help.My playing is 30's and 40's(THink minor league Hawkins .Webster,Lester Young.I edit as best I can and put anything worthwhile on CD
Secondly I have Yamaha WX5 with a Yamaha VL70 Tone Generator.I use this mainly to play classical clarinet and flute duets and trios.
It is just me and I would layer tracks if I knew more about it.I like a vintage sound.I use a tube microphone.Any help would be greatly appreciated.
For instance there is a MOTU 128 Firewire Interface for sale at a really good price. Is there anything this equipment does that my Duet does not?

Guitar Junkie

I googled microphone vacuum tubes and got a bunch of red box tube pre amps but nothing that looks like a tube.where am I going wrong?

Don't google "microphone vacuum tubes", just google "vacuum tubes". They really don't (or didn't) make tubes specifically for microphones, although quite a few tubes seem perfect for that use.

You could find them on eBay as well. Do a search for any NOS (new old stock) that are of the 12A*7 family. Those would include 12AX7, 12AT7, 12AY7, 12AU7 and 12AV7. There is also the 6072A, which is a premium version of the 12AY7. 12AY7 (6072A) is the preferred tube used in most high quality mics, such as the AKGC12 and Telefunken Ela M 250/251 models. GE five star being the best.

specs

Here are the specs on the MXL mike that I bought unseen and untried. As I said it seems to me to record woodwinds and vocals beautifully. But I am a beginner and perhaps there is a tube out there that is a mind blower.
Has anyone used the Mullard 12 AT7 that is listed here. And I would really like to know how the other ingredients rate when compared with other mics in the $600 range.Of course I don't have any idea what all the stuff in a tube mic does."MXL's new flagship microphone, Genesis, exhibits the clarity and warmth
typically associated with the finest tube mics. Designed primarily for vocals,
this large-diaphragm cardioid condenser features a 1.2-inch diameter capsule
with a 6-micron, gold sputtered diaphragm and a hand-selected Mullard 12AT7
tube—known for its clean, rich tone and a silky high-end. The mic has a -10 dB
pad, a 100Hz 6 dB/octave roll-off switch and operates with 48-volt phantom
power. Genesis will be supplied with microphone, power supply, heavy duty
shock-mount, and Mogami mic and tube cables housed in a high quality flight
case. Each Genesis mic is serialized and supplied with QC verification of
excellence"

The MXL Genesis is a great mic and should serve you well.

And over the years, I've recorded Ornette Coleman, Charlie Hayden, Wellman Braud (Duke Ellinton's first bass player), Buddy Childers (Stan Kenton), and Freddie Gruber, so I'm no stranger to what you're trying to do.

And over the years, I've recorded...Charlie Hayden, Wellman Braud...

Awesome.

Haden is amazing. I could live for the rest of my life only hearing the quartet West recordings and never get tired of it.

All of Ellington's bassists were swingin' mofo's.

Harvey and Leddy, anything Dukish gives me an automatic lift. Was the bass player before the great Blanton named Billy Taylor?Duke was always reluctant to let a sideman go so he kept two bassists until one night Taylor(?) announced.I 'm not standin'up here to be embarrassed by that young boy
playin'all that bass",and left the stand.
I was lucky enough to see the great 1940's Duke band at the Maya Theater in L.A. in 1942 in the Review ,Jump For Joy"School had just let out so it was summertime. We found out that a few months later Jimmy Blanton died of T.B.

I believe Wellman Braud was Duke's first bass player. When Wellman quit, Duke replaced hin with two bass players.

I am 80 years old,a veteran reed player of the big band era and an absolute
tyro concerning technology.First I thought if I throw cash at it ,I can't help but be successful. So I bought a Mac Pro eight core(theory confirmed)&Mackie
Speakers(still cool). Then came microphones and the money first idea crashed.
Without going into the specific brands I bought three mics. Two were on high
recommendation from the folks at SweetWater and cost over a grandaroonie.
The third,a Blue Snowball was the best of the lot for recording the Blues and
Ballads that I do.$100 and there goes the most do re mi is best theory.
I did not dig the idea of a drawer full of expensive equipment that I did not use
so how did I react?Spend more money of course.Because my favorite colors
are Red and Gold I bought a MXL Genesis.Crap shoot time pays off!It is a perfect match for my Apogee Duet and my three saxophones.Very smooth and even Creamy sound. But this success was pure dumb luck. How does one buy
equipment over the web(I live in Maui -no equipment stores)that is unreturnable? It seems mic purchases are very subjective.Oh well, after I croak there should be some good stuff at the garage sale.

Big Band Era used all ribbon mics. You might really like them.
