Jazz pentatonic hint
According to Werner Poelert's "Mediantics",the solos of the classic jazz period were constructed on pentatonic roots.Try this sequence for a standard ii-V-I progression (in C = Dm G7 Cmaj7);
Play d pentatonic over the Dm and G7 and go up a step to e pentatonic on the tonic.E penta is e-g-a-b-d which (in C) are the third,fifth,sixth,seventh and ninth and so avoid the "rooty" sound of playing diatonic scales.
Try it!The whole style is more complicated than this,but this part is the foundation.
