Actually, the first UREI's were built using that Altec speaker (Altec 604's) with a modified HF horn. Of course, when JBL bought UREI they had to use their own speaker. When I was a "remastering engineer" at Pickwick Records MANY years ago the monitors that we used were Altec Big Reds and were also designed around the Altec 604. The Urie's remind me of some monitors my brother used to have...Altec theatre drivers from the early 70's...15" with integral horn...He and a friend built cabinets for them using early cabinet design software. They were huge and had 3" x 12" or so slot vents in 'em. We used to have fun playing test tone and sound effects CD's and taping paper over the ports and seeing which tracks and volume levels were most effective at shredding the paper...yep...livin' on the edge...verrry popular with the ladies we were...
