Hi, my friend has some old 45s we'd like to digitize to CD format and MP3s. He has a high-end turntable and analog amplifier and, of course, a computer.

What's our best approach?

Thanks so much for your help and expertise!

You need a software package which will capture the analog signal and digitize it. You can use the stereo mic input on the existing soundcard (most PCs have them) or go for a separate interface (Firewire or USB) that will to the digitizing. There are free programs such as Audacity which will 'record' the input.

Thanks

I appreciate your help. Is the USB a better way to connect than through the stereo mic?

Are there any fine points to know about to create optimal recordings?

Thanks again!

A USB Interface is likely to give you better sound than the soundcard that came with your computer, but you are unlikely to be able to tell when the orginal sound is coming from old vinyl records.

Hi. I use a cheap (free) little program called Golden Records. You can copy records or cassette's in different formats and burn to CD.
