Alright, I'm getting REALLY close to finally laying down the cash!

Sound Card: M-Audio Delta 410 ($100)
Monitors: Edirol MA-10DBK ($120)
MOBO: Albatron nForce2 IGP Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU, Model "KM18G PRO 2.0" ($83)
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1800+, 266 MHz FSB, 256K Cache Processor - OEM ($51)
HD: WD800JB SE, Western Digital (WD) 80GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache, OEM ($70)
RAM: Crucial 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-2700 - OEM ($70)
CD-RW: Samsung 52X32X52 CD-RW Drive, Model SW-252FEN, OEM Bulk ($36)
CASE: REAL CASE (BLACK) 3G Ready Tooless ATX Mid Tower Case with 400watt Power Supply ($45)

Okay, how does this look? I don't want any more power, as I'm on an unbelievably tight budget, but will everything run correctly with that setup? Also, how much vibration should I expect this machine to be able to tolerate? I play through a large, 15" bass speaker, and I hope I'm not going to screw things up with that.

wow! where are you getting that Delta 410 from? thats friggin cheap!

That Athlon 1800+ is getting kinda old now. You should be able to get a 2400+ for just a few bucks more. Rest of it looks good. What about your screen?

It's just that I've had an 1800+ in my machine for a couple of years and I'm looking to upgrade.

You probably wouldn't notice the extra few hundred Mhz if you're just using a word processor but miltitrack audio with plugins love that stuff. I'd get the fastest chip you can afford

Alright... this is along the lines of what i'm looking at... I was aiming for an XP2500+ Barton chip, 333mhz fsb, which clocks at 1.83ghz... now, for recording purposes, how much difference between the Thoroughbred and Barton cores are there? I seem to be only seeing a major difference in the amount of cache on the chips, but that's about it... I'm probably going to splurge for the Barton, but i just want to justify it first...

And also i've been curious about those Edirol monitors... if they're decent at that price, i may spring for some of 'em until i can afford some high-end actives.

So should a 2200 do the job?

Yeh the 2200 won't max out as quick as you add more tracks and plugins.

The Barton chips have the extra cache, kinda like the differenct between the pentium and the celeron

Well, how many tracks with how many plugins do you think I could get out of a 2200?

Why do you want the 410? The reason its so cheap is because M-Audio isn't making it anymore. That translates to no more driver support. It will probably be supported under XP, but forget about it once Microsoft releases another OS.

Well I've had 28 tracks and 16 plugins going on my 1800+ but I still get dropouts. There's no real pattern to them - depends on the weather or something. The faster chip just gives you more room to move before things go pear shaped

No way in hell am I going to "upgrade" to a new MS OS. WinXP is already bad enough, and the new Longhorn is supposed to have the functionality of a web browser in everything it does. As soon as I have the income for a mac, and the time for Linux, that's where I'll be going. In the meantime, I'm absolutely not going to go to Longhorn, so Longhorn support will never be an issue.
