and The Brain...
I think it's done. I'll be meeting with my partner in crime tomorrow to review it and probably move on to our next stage of madness.

This has been a real labor of love this week, learned a lot from this board and I am eternally grateful!! Thanks for all the feedback, it's what forced me to really apply myself and get this sounding right ;) .

(Starz is the last on the list)

Damn, nearly took my head off when the guitars came in. I really like the bass line. The low end has me dumping in my pants. I don't know what you're using to record but it sounds like you're pushing it to the limit. Very cool tune, good use of dynamics and different textures. I really like it.

First and foremost, this blows the doors off of anything my feeble, hillbilly brain could mix up, so take the following with a grain of saltblock.
The only thing that stuck out to me from an EQ standpoint is that it seemed to lose a ton of low energy at about 1:20...if this was intentional, then feel free to laugh at me beginning....NOW.

modern art...hehehe. Great.

Thanks, the last time I shared this here we collectively tore it to shreds, it's good to hear some good things this time as I took what was suggested here back to cakewalk and soundforge and solved most of the issues...

I don't know what you mean about losing the low end at 1:20??

This is meant to be listened to loud. I did. At the break at 1:20, my head quit thumping. Didn't start again until about 2:42. I don't think it's a "flaw," I think the song just changes. I don't have a spectrum analyzer or anything, but it's low...like 50-70Hz stuff. I'm sure you've listened to it a ton, and it's probably s'posed to do that. I just liked the bone rattling lows throughout.

nice work

Good thing I wasn't listening in the car, I'd have a ticket by now. I dig the way the drums/percussion and bass work together.
Guitars are nasty, just right. This is cool.

really really cool!

i like the main riff. very catchy.

sounds nicely done with a lot going on. i love the screaming guitars!

:)

cool tune..

imhop, there is too much boomy bass and low end synth stuff in some spots.. It starts to break up, and almost distorts/clips.. More bass drum would help it thump harder without having that boomy low end imhop..

interesting tune..

Cool tune but up past 1:30 or so the bass starts woofing out. Not bad my friend.

I think the music is pretty cool....but....... the different instruments lack any defination between them, and it lacks the power that is needed to smack you in the chest. I'd lose ALL the reverb in this track...and cut some freqs in the guitar tracks to help them not be so tinny/harsh. Kinda an abrupt fade/ending too. The tune is the best part, and the recording quality needs to match it to be top notch. Give each instrument its own space and things will clear up major-ly, imo. Losing the reverb (or very audible stuff) will bring things foward and more in your face. As it is...it is kinda a wash of sound with a loooow thumping thing happening.

Thanks for the props peeps :p

I am still new to good instrument separation. I'm going to have to do some studying on EQ'ing... I typically don't layer this many things to get the sound I want, so the muddiness is definitely from a lack of experience doing this level of production. I also didn't have good stuff to work with (a couple cheap guitars and a mixer, the rest of the "magic" was done with software... oh, and no bass guitar, used an acoustic w/ pick-up and dropped it an octave ;) ). I am going to focus on getting a really good, clean recording of the instrument next time and play with the clean version in soundforge before deciding on a final sound. I go about things the way I knew how from 4 tracking days, but times have certainly changed ;).

Very wise idea ... for all your instruments. That's how I try to get instruments to play friendly with each other... record pieces that will fit in the mix... before the mix. I'll record guitars brighter than I like for parts with bass, since I'd have to roll off lows, anyway... for example.

This is one o' them points (in my own efforts) that keeps comin' back to pound me in the head... it's much easier to mix good stuff than to throw crap into the mix and make it work with software :p After 120 or so takes running bass guitar thru the J-Station yesterday, figuring I hated the takes because of the timing/feel -- I do three takes d.i.'ed thru a DMP3. It worked... Verdict? Get a good sound first, or you'll spend a helluva lot of time turd polishing.

BTW nice ambient tune... almost an "electronic coffeehouse" mood to it.

I've never had to do that

I like the "electronic coffeehouse" title, mind if I borrow it? (not for this, but just in general) :D

Thanks, sometimes hearing good stuff about your tunes is as valuable as criticism (though the criticism has really shaped this into what it is :) )

These tracks are all available now from the website with a much better download speed http://www.the-boogiemen.com

the accoustic gtr with all the electronica is interesting .... you got some good advice already ... I can't add much... interesting piece for sure ... a little mushy but still interesting...
cheers
