okay, so I want to record a small band "live" with a Mackie 1202 mixer -> computer, at a friends house. The thing is, I don't want to lug amps there and mic them. I want to send the guitar and bass straight to the mixer. So, is there a way that all of us can listen to what's playing, and sing along? The playing will be live, but I might also want to be able to record vocals for music is being played back. Also, it helps because the vocal mics won't be picking up the amp sound. So how could we do this? Headphones sounds logical. I'm guessing I'd have to get a headphone amp, connect it to the mixer's headphone output, and plug three headphones to it.

I don't actually have the equipment yet, I just wanted to ask so I know if it's possible. thanks.

You're on the right track. Avoid the bleed that'll occur if you have mics picking up the vocals with everything else in the background. The Rolls HA43 and 3 sets of decent cans will do the job. Don't use the headphone outs. The Rolls sounds better when fed with the line level signal from the mixer. Some people here have griped about the quality of Rolls stuff but I've had no complaints for $80. I'm sure there's better stuff out there but I can't afford it. Get some decent headphones to make this work. Dont use crappy walkman phones.

Jeez...... sounds like the first gig I ever did......

but one quick thing, are U recording drums as well???
and what audio prog will U be using to record.... because if U have the option of multitrackin, then why not use it. First have the guitarist and bassist play with the singer but just don't record the singer, ONLY record the git and bass player, and make sure to use seperate tracks. Then after get the singer to put on some headphones, set up the mic and let him sing along to the git and bass while U record the vocal. U won't have to worry about bleed either.... unless U have those head phones REALLY loud.......

also by doing it this way U also will get 3 sperate tracks U can mix after......

Thanks sabith and drstawl.. I guess I'm gonna get a headphone amp. I won't be recording drums, other than possibly a drum program or machine. At home, I have an SB Live, but over there I'll have to bring a laptop, which does have a line in plug, but may compromise our sound quality. Also, it's only 133mhz with a 1 gig HD, so the multitracking software will be slow, whichever one I'll be using. If my friend let's me impose on him enough to use his computer, I still won't have a way to get the sound files to my computer (unless he lets me install him a network card to transfer to my laptop).

I was looking at the Rolls amps, now I'll look for the aforementioned model. As for headphones, it's the sony Mdr7056 for myself, and i'm trying to find two other pairs around $50.

well....... if U have a normal PC, with a mini tower case, I know it sounds like a lot of work......... but just drag it over there, and it will save U having to transfer everything. This will probly save U a lot of time.
and if U will comprimise sound quality then U should exclude the option totally... it will be worth the extra effort to drag your PC over....... trust me, sound quality isn't a good area to cheap out on..........

I do it....... why can't someone else share the annoyance....
