Spread the Daf!
A month or two ago chrisharris posted a song I liked. It was called "Supposed To Do" and sounded to me like it could use some horns ( what doesn't? ) and when I asked if I could do some he said sure. So as usual it took me way longer than he had hoped but I'm finally finished with it. I sent the tracks to him and he did the mixing. After a few tweaking sessions....this is what we ended up with.

Supposed To Do

Wow,a great song done better!
Chris's voice is just fantastic, definitly the Eagles there!

I love the way you mixed the horns,LT.
Absolutly perfect job!
The lead mixes with it just right, hard to seperate the two.
No easy task,I'm sure.

I give it two big thumbs up,(and five stars!):D

Really great!

Pete

More stars from me, sounds great guys. I don't know if I heard the first version, but I really dig the horns and vocals. I think it actually has a live feel, like in a small club. Nice job! :D

I heard the rough mix a few days ago and I haven't dialed up the new one yet, so I'll be back. (have to shut down my computer and reboot to listen through my studio monitors) I just wanted to say that I love the song and the horn parts. The whole thing is great--my idea of great music with real feeling. I could listen to stuff like this all day long.

Wusssssuuuup fellas,
Great song Chris........ and I agree, GREAT vocals man. I heard this when it was originally posted and loved it then. This is a nice song for a horns too. There might be just a touch of freq. crowding around the sax,IMveryHO. The volume level sounds good, the horns just sound kinda cramped for breathing room. Its tough mixing sax in on something thats already done.....at least that was my experience. This is a great American song with a great American feel. ......I really like it alot. And to the mad Lt., nice work again my man.:)

You guys smoke!!!!

D@@@@@mmmmmmnnnnn Buff'd Bob! I hate U!!!;) Luv the horn arrangement! A tad more separation of the horns via panning
would add a lil mo presence!
Excellent!

Sounds a bit like Tuesday's Gone. But I've only heard a cover version of it. That vocal part at about 1:00 sounded like Bon Jovi. And I don't mean it in a bad way. But I guess you didn't do them...

I don't think I've heard the first chrisharris version. The horns do make the song soulful and definitely don't do any harm.

ok, ok, I'll sell my freaking horns. Lt. I'm glad chris let you horn up on this one. great song, great stuff. Now where's chris. I must tell him. he he he

nice collab..

I thought the overall mix sounded pretty compressed and mid rangy at times.. it didnt sound as good LOUD as it did low..

good collab though.. Lt. adds another one to his list of hits! :)

Lt. ,

are you and Clarence Clemens twins separated at birth?.....great job dude.....

i too liked this song alot the first time i heard it (actually i loved it)....cant say it was begging for a horn part to me, but in typical fashion, you found the pocket to put it in...awesome complimentary lines.......

i also hear the Bon Jovi-ness of the vocal in parts as well as the groove....all its missing is a Richie Sambora BG vocal....:D

The horn arrangement really does it!

It really helps solidify that southern rhythm and blues feel. I agree with B.S. that the mix is a bit too midrangy, especially the vocals.

Nice work!:D

I loved this then and I love it even more now! Nice work. Sir, yes Sir!

nice horn. nice tune. a good live mix. a little upper mid competition between horn and guitar. Nice job patching. I wish I could get that horn sound, its fat! love the grind on the low end of the B4. good job band, and mix.

Many thanks to Lt. Bob for helping me out on this one. As if we didn't all know, he's a talented pro.

I didn't "mix" the horns at all...because I didn't really trust myself to do that. Lt. Bob did the tracks, then sent a pre-mixed horn track to me, and I just threw it into the multitrack with the original tracks, then remixed. I did some volume enveloping with the sax, and threw a little verb on Lt. Bob's tracks...and with some tweaking advice from Steve, this is what I got.

The hardest part is that the lead git and the horns seem to occupy a lot of the same frequencies, and I'm sensing from the comments that the mix is "middy" now. Also, some of the guitar bends are off pitch (which I'd almost forgotten), so I had to bury the horns in a couple of places where I'd screwed up the lead (b/c the horns are totally IN key). Of course, since I remixed the whole thing, I may have just done some funky EQ'ing that's responsible for the middy flavor. I dunno', but I appreciate the comments, and I'd appreciate some more tips about the midrange problems too.

If anyone wants to compare, the original (without horns) is here, but I think it had too many lows in it, which was making the vocal muddy. www.nowhereradio.com/honestmango/singles - Kinda' in the middle of the page.

Lt. Bob really made this shine, and I hope I get to do more with him in the future. Thanks, Steve.

:D

And another thing...

If I had started this thread, like Lt. Bob did, then I would have thanked each of you PERSONALLY for listening and commenting.

*ahem*

My first time hearing the song...great collab, guys. Lt. Bob, you always deliver the goods, the horns are fantastic. Chris has written and performed another gem. I listened at moderate volume, and really dig the song...the only thing that struck me that seemed to need changing is the effects on or layering of the fill guitars...just seemed a little much, too much of a good thing?
A minor point, since this is such a fine song.

big stereo image, high quality of recording/performance. Man...I am gonna have to lock myself in my bedroom and work harder.

Mark, when you bend and play out of pitch as much as this, effects are an absolute necessity. :D Actually, your sentiment was shared by a lot of other folks the first time this went through the clinic. DUH-LAY = TOO MUCH. I think you'll just have to take my word that it actually sounds worse without it. :D Thanks for listening. You haven't been around as much, have you? Maybe that's me.

AIA2- that was really cool of you to say. Thanks for listening.

Took me a while to get back to this and chris kinda beat me to it but thanks to everyone who listened, here goes.......

muzeman....yeah chris definitely has a voice on him. Wish I could sing like that but then....who needs to since I've got him to do it for me...the lead and the horns are kinda hard to put together without mushing all up but I think chris did a pretty good job of it...

Barometer....thanks man, I thought it felt live too....sorta like a big ol' echoey gym back when the big horn bands came through....
the good old days ya' know?......

crawdad.....thanks bro.....always appreciate a listen from you, hopefully things will slow down in a week or so and we can start planning out our next thing.....

G.....always glad to get your input....you have a bit of experience with this now so you know what's involved and it is hard to lay in something that takes up that much space in the mix with what was a finished song 'till I came sniffing around pushing my way in. I always appreciate everyone's tolerance of my desire to play on everything I hear....

MISTERQUE........look forward to meeting you at the next Jamfest.......Tower of Power rhythm section in the house!......

Crankyone.......Bon Jovi huh?.....guess I'll have to go check that out.....I've never really listened to him but you say he sings as good as chris? :D....

dtb....what kind of horns you selling? I'm always looking for a deal...:D...thanks for listening.....

Sam!.....good to hear from you......is that what I'm hearing? .....compression.....I have thought that things on this sounded a little cluttered but I thought it was just because there's so much going on and then I barge in and add a shitload of horns......but maybe if things were'nt compressed there might be better separation?........thanks for taking the time to listen, I always appreciate your opinions....

Gidge.....thanks man.....we haven't been separated yet......I just make Clarence look the other way when I bring a girl home :D....I'm gonna get you a schedule of the daughter band before the weekends out but next Saturday we're at Serano's after the game....it's outside so you could bring the little one....

barefoot.....thanks a lot for the listen, I really liked your latest thing and I appreciate your comments a lot....yeah it is a little midrangey.....almost everything on the song is in that EQ band and I guess it all just builds up.....

JR#97....at ease soldier....stop that boogieing right now! :D......

Toki987....all you have to do ito get that sound is hire me!....just kidding but I am for sale....do you play horn or do you record someone who does?....I can pretty much tell you how to get it if you want to know....PM me....

chris....you're absolutely right and I'm attending to it right now....thanks for letting me intrude on your song man......

mkg.....I'm glad you liked the horns.....I really enjoyed playing on this one 'cause it's so much like what we played back in the days when horn bands ruled, and here in La., there are still a few blue-eyed soul bands floating around so this was home for me.....

A1A2.....I've always thought that was a cool handle....thanks man....we appreciate ya'.......but don't stay in you room too long...you need some sun, and meet a nice girl.....and walk the dog...and.......................

Shit .....I get too busy to check the thread and there's a major influx of people to thank.....so:
THANKS EVERYONE ....I always appreciate everyone here at Homerec. When I'm on something new, I'm like a kid before Christmas waiting to hear from all of you. I do thank you all for putting up with me and I value your opinions more than I can really say without getting all mushy...and no one wants that I'm sure. So thanks all for checking it out.....

hey Lt., don't listen too much to my comments.. I have monsterous mix problems myself that I can't solve.. There was just something about it that was a bit harsh.. It may have been the way it was e.q.'d, but you probably know better than I do..

I did like this tune before, and now the sax is the 'ice pick in the forehead.'

once again, a 5 star collab dude..
