i have one machine running on asrock and another on asus(both using amd processors). A7V600, A7N8X both should be great. just make sure your friend doesn't buy any motherboard with sis chipset if he plans to use protools hardware in future.

True, but anyone who's thinking about getting Protools should ALWAYS check the hardware compatibility list on digidesign.com. They're picky.

yea... It may shorten life, but if properly done, it will be something like.... lasting 10 years instead of 20. In other words, a properly OC'd processor will still be in the landfill as obsolete junk long before it's worn out. My Barton moblie running 2400 MHz still idles at less than 120f so it's not under too much stress, and it will run for days on end without booting.
True but there are a lot of things that can go wrong when clocking, and if you dont point them out, then we all know who gets yelled out when a chip is fried, or the system lasts 6 months because the chip is slightly faulty, then when you take it back they tell you it's been clocked, and people get yelled at again.

I have a fair bit of experience running Protools with PC systems... simple answer is avoid putting anything into the PCI slots. Raid controllers, SATA controllers, anything which is remotely complicated is NOT appreciated by the DigiCard.

I had a 500gb SATA array, and couldn't get Protools running at all. I had to take the disks out and put them in a different machine in the end, and just map them as network drives...

grrr

i haven't read all the replies cuz i'm late to the thread BUT the 64 athlon chips kill anything thats out now for DAW purposes
