Ok, what's the best softsynth in 2003?

This stuff has had a while to mature, there must be something good by now. I'm not talking about a program that can create synth sounds but an interface that has programmed sounds and is easy and fun to use not to mention great sounding.

I tried this a couple of years ago and decided to leave it alone for a few years and see how progress evolves the softsynth. I'm ready, any suggestions?

I'm not really sure I know what you're talking about, but if it's plugin-instruments for like Cubase or Sonar I really suggest you check this out:

This is a freeware softsynth that just rocks!
The presets are just amazing.

No not plug ins, I'm looking for srandalone type softsynths.

Christiaan do you have any music with the reason synth in it? I would live to hear it before I try the demo.

I made an instrumental version of Christina Aguilera's Beautiful a month ago. My webserver has issues now but I'll put something online that I've made in Reason somewhere when I get home from work and post a url here.

I know, it's not perfect but I won't fix that until I've convinced my friend to sing it for me.
Drumsamples are 3rd party but the rest is Reason.

I'd say Reason 2 with the latest 2.5 update. Its awesome.

Well, Reason IS cool - I've got 2.5 up, but haven't used the new features yet.

But Reason is a Soft Studio, not a Soft Synth. It has softsynths in it - Subtractor and Malstrom are great - but it's a whole package, like FruityLoops or Project.

As far as soft synths go, I'm impressed with Tassman, Reaktor, and the new Modular Moog. But not enough to buy, yet. If money weren't tight, I'd probably have at least one of these by now...

Daf (who DOES like Triangle)

Hmm....a soft moog? That sounds interesting. Yeah, I'm really not into the multi type approach. I just want something that looks like a simple synth and has great tweakable sounds.

Looks promising...
