Alright so here's my question...

I open up pro tools m powered set up a new track and name it and everything. And it automatically sets the fader on my projectmix to about half way. Then I mess with the gain knob to set the signal decent. However should I change the fader or record it at the level pro tools sets it to. I guess my question is do I just use gain to make sure I'm not clipping or do I turn the fader down as well. Also does it make a differnece what volume I record at, as far as the fader is considered.

Sort answer is adjust the pre/gain not the fader.

F.S.

the fader in pro tools is just on the monitor side. In other words you're only affecting what you hear AFTER it's already recorded. No changes to the fader will affect your recording.

exactly.

and also, make sure when you're recording that you're metering PRE fader, otherwise with the right combination of mistakes you could be recording too hot or not hot enough...

How do I know I'm doing it pre fader, do I just make sure the signal isn't clipping before I record?

if you're meter PRE fader, then if you move your fader the meter shouldn't change. if you're meter POST fader, then when you pull the fader down the meter will drop as well..

it's also in preference->display tab i think.
