:o Sorry if i cried too much wolf earlier today with "Caribou Nation" but i just couldn't help it :D

I got up at 8 a.m. today and worked on this until 11:50 p.m. I got a lot of interesting new techniques in this one.

I downloaded the Waves package and I hope I used the Sonic Maximizer correctly. I placed it at the last stage before the mix meters and nowhere else. It seemed to be a much better limiter than the one that came packaged with Sonar and I'll be damned if it didn't at least make it sound about 5 db louder. Thanks for the tip Sam!

Anyway, the song is called "Parley"

"Parley"

Ominous!

That was some freaky shit, man.

I loved it!

But I couldn't make out 99% of the words.

The guitars and what ever that other string patch was, sounded incredible!

Cheers! :)

Tres Cool. Bone Shattering bass is fun on the cans. It's not out of control bassy, though...just cool.

I could make out most of the words, and I liked the Dave Mustaine kinda' thing you had going on with the way you delivered 'em. My only nit (on headphones) would be the SOUND of the vocal...kinda' dry and middy, but not that intentional dry and middy, if you know what I mean...kinda' like that SM58 dry middy that all my recordings are so famous for. Of course, since you heard the mbuster tune, you know I have no useful advice when it comes to judicious and tasteful use of "vocal effects," lol.

Anyway...sounds big and warm. Nice job.

ahh.. no lyrics on this song, the vox are just intrumental

I'll put up a few words because it just looks better than a blank page.

Thanks for the kind words Ghost. Hey Chris, thanks for the listen. Yeah i wanted her to have a bottom end. I broke out the 808 for this one so she'd withstand clubby. Your review was helpful, perhaps one day i'll get that bubblegum pop feel im chasin. ;)

p.s. if you think that sounds like Mustaine you must've listened to "bully pulpit"

Sneaks up on ya, good fade in.
It's as if you give us enough, just before we might complain we don't have enough.
I no understand word comrade ...
When are you going to slam us with the HUGE GUITARS The SUSPENSE IS KILLLLLLLLINGGGG ME !!!

00:56, ok ... And no, I'm not looking at the wav file ...

Excellent guitars.

Ok, at 1:39, 'turn to greed', dirty things we feed ...

I'm hearing some of it now ...

ohhhh, the doc came and stuck the special needles in you two huh :D

It's moody, wierd, music and I like it, because we ... on this board ... are special peeplzzzzzz :D

And you make a point in the previous post of saying the 'vocal is an instrumental' ... that's very cool with me ... yes, and you've mixed it appropriately.

looks better than no words on the page ... actually just a few lines of prose look quite 'avant garde' on a webpage.

AHHHH FUCK!

I now qualify as legally retarded in most states. It WAS a link to "Bully Pulpit". My apologies to anyone who has already listened and reviewed in this thread, the song you heard was not the one I intended.

Ahh man, i've been tracking and mixing since 8 a.m. no wonder im mental. Thanks for listening though Studio, it's always appreciated, i'll probably go back and rework that one someday.

Here again is a link to the song. I've updated the associated mp3 file:
"Parley"

I find most "techno" music boring

Your's isn't.

Doesn't seem like 4:30

Dynamic and loud. Nice work. This is a keeper.

Can't Say I didn't try: (twice)

Here's what I got.

::error 404 ____Are you udderly cowfused by this error?

Translation: The web page you have requested has been deleted or mooooved by the author of the web site you are visiting.

And I swear, I'm not kidding. Best error message ever.

Ok, i need to go lie down with a pillow taped to my chest and back and a caulander on my head wrapped in tinfoil.

I fixed the 2nd link in this thread, they both work now.

Heh! My host is "FatCow" :p They're pretty good, i can only blame myself for the goofs.

nice beats.......it's a good mix.......i'm not really good in terms of giving techno suggestions, but it seems fine mix wise...........nice bottom end...........

i was just waiting for you to sample in some of your own song w/ some carribou nation odd noises:D

hmmmm, a 320 mp3 that weighs 10.4 m.b.'s.... approximately 3 times the size of the average post..

aside from the bloated file size, this is a very cool piece.. are you using a whammy pedal or shifting in sonar? nice vocals! I really like the feel of this.. I kept expecting it to blow up at some point with a monsterous sound.. still cool.. lots of tension that never releases.. I like the sound of the 808-ish drums.. very cool song!!

BTW, God didn't 'leave' the room... maybe he just 'left' you room..

p.m. in flight..

My favorite part is the BIG FAT BOTTOM END! :p

Some cool sounds. I don't do much clubing these days (OK I never did much clubbing  :) ), but seems like it would fit well there.

I liked the vocals and the guitar sound. The high drum grated on me a little on headphones, but in a club environment I think it would cut though like it needed to.

I would have like a little more of a build-up and surprise. Maybe a change to something a little more chaotic, then back. Just me thinking/typing out loud.

Good work!

Khompy BABY!!!!!!!!!!!

GOOD to be here to hear!!!!!!!!!
This has to be right up there with your last, say.....3 new tune posts. Each new song shows us a little more of the unique style you are creating.
This HAS to be sent to nasty DAVE the Iradio guy..........
Your vocal gets me thinking of one of my favourite Canadian bands, Tea Party. I just love any reference to east indian music!
I discovered it a few years ago and am being constantly blown away by it!
Your guitar playing is SOLID as a rock all the way thru this recording.
You just blew me AWAY.
And thanks for all the good vibes when I was down!
I'm feeling MUCH better and Prozkgrl is taking excellent care of me. I can't drive or go to work for at least another month so, looks like a perfect opp for some NEW tunage........................
Wish me Luck.
I look forward to hearing this on the IN The Mix show!!!!

Love ya Man!!!!

Dan

Sounds awesome man. That opening riff sounds derivitive of the "other tune."

Nice guitar entry at 2:48. Neat effects!

Almost like a Radiohead meets Tool thing happening there. Sounded real good!

What is it with these 10MB downloads?

Techno isn't my thing, but I thought this was still pretty cool nevertheless. Some nice sounds from the rhythm section. Aside from the standard thumping kick, there's a lot of "extras" thrown in when they're not expected. Good job with that.

Somewhat wild effects on the vocals. BIG reverb, but it works well for the style.

Real thick full sound across the board.

My only gripes would probably be material related. Lots of repetition of themes over a 4 and a half minute song.

Overall a top notch job.

What, is this some kind of joke? It's just vocals saying stupid stuff, and it's badly recorded and it's too damn short too.

What a waste of time....

:D

Hehe. Cool riff, Khompy. Guitars sound great.

And I agree with Trip: the addition of an other riff might help keeping this song more alive and exciting. I do like the mindnumbing effect of a droning guitarriff, but a change in the music can do wonders sometimes. Just a thought.

Liked the minor counter-harmonic stuff in the vocals a lot. Much more polished vocal sound than "the other" song too. This is techno like NIN is techno, lol...more like industrial in my mind. Man, the harmonic guitar stuff is cool too.

No nits on this. Well done. Are you using any samples, or do you make loops yourself?

I liked everything except the vocals. If their not going to sing actual lyrics, then I think something a lot more ethereal would have worked better, especially that early in the piece. I really liked where the guitar solo first came in and then how the sound of the guitar morphed a little later. Very clever.

I feel obligated to respond to this even though I have absolutely no idea of how/why/where/with what/you did any of this stuff. But anyone who composes and arranges a piece with such emotion and staying power as 'Caribou Nation' deserves a listen. What can I tell you about the mix? Nothing - I play an acoustic guitar. What can I tell you about the guitar tones - I liked them.

BUT

I can tell you if you would have been around when I was in college - say 1969 - I would have been a
HUGE
fan.

thank you - i know you get my drift - I liked this a lot
Milan

M.Brane - Thanks man, you know I wanna get into the keepers folder for sure. Glad the mix seems loud, i really liked the maximizer plug=in.

powderfinger - "Carribou Nation" lives! Or maybe it will return in some form or i'll make "Carry Nation 2". heh! Thanks for the listen.

B.SABBATH - You only have yourself to blame for the big download, i didn't even know how to switch the bit sampling rate of mp3's until you alerted me to the fact that it could be done. I thought they were all the same and lo-fi / hi-fi was just a function of what the server could download. I will probably go back and shrink this and future releases into the 5mb range again.

The guitar f/x were all achieved tying a midi expression pedal to a pitch shifter or phaser. As far as the "god has left the room" phrase, someone close to me recently had a sonogram for a baby and they couldn't find the heartbeat and she lost it. I guess that's where that expression is coming from, it's not really meant to be a nihilistic kind of thing.

Thanks for the cool feedback, i sent you a pm.

skids - Hah! "Talkin bout mud flaps my girls gottem!" Yeah i wanted it to withstand a club enviro, was even thinking about boosting the highs somewhat but now that you mention this I probably wont. Thank you.

HevyDan - Welcome Back Doood! You gave us all a scare there, welcome back and NICE SAVE. You sound like you're all still there so congrats man. Thanks for the great comments, enjoy the time home while ya got it. Yeah, i'd like to get back on Dave's show at some point, actually I have some collabs in the works I think I was gonna try those, it's always more fun when you can share it with someone else. But I think it's really cool what he's doing and I'm glad he's around.

Sluice - Thank you sir! Yep i love those two bands, just love em. So I hope you're having luck with "the other". When you're finished, if you have any "garnish" ideas, lemme know. I may take one final pass through for f/x, leads. May the spoon bend.

TripleM - Thanks for the listen Mmm. The kit samples are definitely 808 but I'm hoping more people will see it like chris did, more "industrial" than "techno"

Pedullist - NOOOOO!! NOT CARRIE NASHUN!!! Whew! Thank you for listening to the right one. Yeah that riff took a long time to cycle. I couldn't move the pedal board slowly enough using my feet so I had to lay it in my lap and use my right hand to cycle the phaser over 32 measures. It was moving more horizontally for me than vertically if that makes sense.

chris - Finally, I gave you the right link. Thank for being patient and thanks for the review. The drums and the pads at :44 are samples, everything else is home grown and none of the guitars are looped just long takes.

Jim Soloway - Hey Jim, thanks for the review and feedback. I'm sorry you didn't like the vox, but at least you liked the guits. Thanks again, my next one will have vox you'll like or my name isn't Smithers. :D

p.s. almost missed you MC Guits - Heh! Thats what you get for posting while im writin! Hey i'll share with you how I got any sounds on it if you're interested just lemme know, most are techniques learned from this board. Thank you for the kind words, I wouldn't have minded college in '69 myself.

I have a feeling I'm never going to be able to duplicate the majestic hit that is "Caribou Nation". I will spend the rest of my life drinking and fruitlessly chasing a follow up to my smash hit, dubbed the "Citizen Kane" of a capella. ;)
