...that the Athalon 64 bit chips aren't compatible with a lot of software while the Pentium 64 bit chip tends to be much more consistent.

Is he just trying to make a better sale?

I have never known a computer store guy to really have very good info, especially when it comes to audio computing.

Anyone have a 64 bit Athalon? Any problems with software compatibility?

i do,

although i have not used every piece of software available for audio recording, i would say that that guy is BS'ing you. Sonar works just fine on my computer...

Sounds likethe salesman doesn't know what the hell hes talking about & hes trying to sell you a "more expensive" chip... There are many people on this board that will swear by the chip including me.

If you do buy that Prescott chip you're more than likely gonna have problems with Hyperthreading trying to do audio on that machine.

yeah i'd take what a sales guy says with a grain of salt, esp if he's in one of the big box stores. they like to talk out of their butts and often don't know more than the consumer. i have no experience with the athlon64, but last year i bought an athlonxp desktop and it's been working well for audio. my pc never crashes or anything. athlon has generally been better regarded for the past several years

AHAHAHA!
That guy knows nothing. I build and service computers for a living... if anything, the athlon 64 will have more benefits than issues...

read this

i have a heavily overclocked Athlon 64, 1 gig of PC4000 ram and have never had any issues specific to my cpu.

Take what salesmen say with a grain of salt.

Ok, thanks guys. I have beeen using Athalon chips in all my systems for years now and I have never had an issue but I thought the 64 bit chips might have been buggy if he said so.

I don't usually pay those douchebags any mind but I thought I would be safe and check.

The guy is talking complete balls.
AMD64 will fall back to 32bit mode if you run any software that is not 64bit.

I know plenty of people with AMD64 chips and they haven't encountered any problems.

Ask him how much the "spiff" is on the Pentium, as opposed to the P4 system. That'll tell you why he wants you to buy the P4 system :D.

Salesmen are salesmen......just one level up from marketing in the evolution chain (and both still below lawyers).

You want fries with it as well? If you believe what salespeople tell you you are very close to believe politicians.

Hey man, fuck off.

I asked here because I was suspicious.

Jackass.

This thread is over moron.
