ok so my band is entering "the studio"

I'm trying to come up with the "physics" of it - It is a rare thing to this extent...

Somewhere the positive swing is being squared off and the negative is allowed to pass through at a reduced level.

So essentially, I guess it is pretty freakin' similar to DC offset...

I've only seen it in crazy-phasy conditions (such as this one). The DC Offset is fine though - The tight/mono section at the head of the file is right on. Once it picks up and the rest of everything starts, that's when it all goes to hell in a handbasket.

I can simulate it using a square wave generator (positive only and then shifting) but I'm not certain what you would need to go through to actually do this on purpose... Except for setting a limiter at just the right release time to chop the top and leave the bottom...

Normally I only see it in synth sections, etc.

Where's Ethan when you need him...? I'm sure he could 'splain this properly...

Same problem - Just less of it.

Any way you can solo instruments or groups up and record the results? The TapeIT plug if you're VST... I'm thinking it's the guitars...

yeah it probably is. so should i be ok now or should i read the mixing101 more?

Well, the second one looks just like the first one but turned down a few dB... So, the problem is still there - We've got to start there.

I tried messaging you on AIM about some stuff... but you havent been on. I really like that you guys are giving me feedback on this stuff... so whatever you think im having problems with, please let me know..

Wouldn't that happen if you had a badly clipped track (like guitar) and it was panned hard left or right and turned up way too loud? I'm just guessing here.

No, the wave would be clipped on the positive AND negative swing.

Are we talking about half of a periodic wave disappearing here? Like chopping a sine wave lengthways / horizontally?

Oh, yea. Duhhh what the hell was I thinking. I haven't had my coffe this morning. What noisedude said sounds more like it.

Yup. About the top 1/3 of the positive crest.

Wow. That's bizarre! I'm no expert by any means but I can't see any explanation for how you might do that without realising.
