pretty bloody good for a s/blaster...keep it up man...great work
I love when people achieve good results with minimal gear (well yours is not minimal, but as you say it can be better)..
that's great

cheers

Yes, it's minimal...it's ok to say. Don't have to be PC with me :D. I really am excited to start some upgrading. I'm very close to getting a new card. I can't wait to hear the difference (especially recording int 24 bit instead of 16 bit) :D.

Nice job, John. Thumbs up.

I might drop the DI part of the guitar mix just a DB or two. Just my personal preference. Pretty clean sound, though.

then either monitors or a better mic - don't know which yet.
I would definitely vote for the monitors first. It's funny, this whole thing is about making stuff "sound" good, but monitors were one of the last pieces of equipment I bought. Consequently, it's taken me 4X as long to be able to mix bass becasue I did it "wrong" for so long. Don't be as stupid as me...lol.

I have to agree with Chris. Saying monitors are important is the understatement of the year! I just never knew how crappy my speakers sounded until I got real monitors. Night and day - literally. And I struggled with mixing (still am) for years as well. But the return on a good set of monitors is immediate!

Hehehehe...for me, it was just the opposite. I had no idea how GREAT my speakers sounded until I got monitors. I mean, all my stuff sounded warm and wonderful on those JBL's, lol...I couldn't figure out what the hell was wrong with you people. Well, when the hyped low end went away, and the harshness of the mix was heard in its full sonic glory, lol...Anyway, I will say that the JBL's were still much better than the total guesswork created by computer speakers... So if it's an option to hook up some shelf stereo speaks to your computer in place of your computer speakers, I'd say do that yesterday, lol. (probably need the amp, too).

shutting up now.

[edit] If I forgot to mention it, I really like both versions of this song (PC, I know), but it's true. My roots make me like this one as much as my musical history makes me wanna' like Crawdad's. Hey, did anybody else notice that Crawdad had like, 100 posts in my "Revenge On Jamal" thread and didn't mention the song? Jamal thinks it's because Crawdad hates the song. :D :D I told Jamal he's right... If you can't say something nice, talk about Autotune, lol. (total joke there, btw...Jamal never notices anything).

Thanks Mike :). Yeah, now that I heard it in the car (my great mix test  :D) the DI tone gets a little wearying after awhile.

What if I don't want to hear how crappy my mixes are :D:D j/k. Monitors would be an easier sell to my wife too because it would mean getting rid of some 25 year old beat up brown crappy stereo speakers. She's all for that. If I got a mic she would say "you already have a mic, what do you need another one for?" :D

If there were any flaws in this I didn't notice, cause that voice of your's knocked me the hell out:D . Great cover of a great song..

I`m late listening, I been rationing time over the last week gettin the kid set up for school. Thats a wonderful rendition of a wonderful tune. The seasoning and dues long payed are in it all the way.

David - Thanks, that means a lot to me. And yes, once again, this is a great song. Songs like this don't care who sing them. :)

Toki - Thanks man. I hear ya with the time thing. I'm feeling a little guilty because the board has been so busy lately I haven't been able to keep up. I'm working on something another cover to post shortly ;);) (probably early next week), I have scratch tracks of another song I wrote to post, plus I may be posting a collab where I did vocals on for you guys to give some mix feedback (I didn't mix it, my friend did, and it sounds pretty good on my computer speakers  ). I will catch up though. I really enjoy listening to the stuff here, even if I can't always be the most helpful with advice. Just wait until I get those monitors, I'll be ripping you all apart ;) :D (j/k - I'll be too busy ripping me apart :D).
