Whats the best mic that YOU think I can get for under $300.00?

This will be used for male r&b vocals and rap only.

You could probably do ok for rap and r&b for less, but for a street price of 300 you could go with the following for a condenser

AudioTechnica 4040 or 3525
Shure KSM27
AKG3000

But if you wanted a dynamic because you like to do handheld then the sennheiser 421 would also have a street price of 300

The AT's are nice, but I'm going to have to suggest a Studio Projects mic, the are just SOO good. Ask anyone here.

Good means different things to different people. And...

HOLY SHOOT!

They dropped the price of the CAD M179 on 8th stree4t to 199. Continuous variable pattern and a proven capsule. I cannot say enough good things about this mic. It's not for voices that need a little more color, but for almost everything else, it's just GREAT. I do mostly orchestra and small ensemble recording...strings, brass, winds, small and large groups...it's a very VERY good mic.

CAD M179, 200 bucks. WOW.

still torn?

Get yourself a mic and make some music!!! :D

BTW, get yourself a SP C1! :)

Marshall MXLv67G
Marshall MXLv77
Marshall MXLv69
Studio Projects C1
Studio Projects C3
Studio Projects TB1
Rode NTK
Rode NT1000
Sennheiser MD421
Shure SM7B

I may have stretched $300 a few dollars......

"I" would get the v77

Once again, for the millionth time, get on ebay and hunt down a used Sennheiser MD-441 for around $300. It kicks the ass of any other mic in that price range (and its about $800 new, so $300 is awesome)
Take your time and wait for one to pop up and be smart.
Pissing in the wind again?
Probably. :)

Yeah. . . what Tubedude said. The Sennheiser 421 is a pretty common vocal mic for Rap. The 441 would be even better. What Gidge said about the Shure SM7b is spot on too.

Other mics to consider would be:

Beyerdynamic M88
Shure SM57 + pop screen
Oktava 319

I would HIGHLY suggest a 441 or 421, followed closely by the SM7. After that I would go with a Studio Projects C1.

There's something wrong with this sentence.

A 421 Owner ;)

i did a rap record with a singer who had just totally out of control plosives. i ended up using a beyer m201 with the giant windscreen attached to it. and it worked out like a dream. let me throw this one up on the list.

at the time i didnt have my 441... i would try that now....

and jeez i could see trying the 319 as well. when that mic works it works really well. especially for $99.

you might want to try two flavors, like a 421 and an oktava 319, good to mix things up in rap. like use one mic on verses, another on choruses... or double up the vocals one on each mic.

really recording rap is pretty tough, i wouldnt do a all in one mic. some rap tracks sound just great lo fi as well. dont throw away that 57. go to garage sales and pick up "tape recorder hi-z" mics as well.

sorry just here to confuse you. a used blue bottle might work as well...
