I know this has been done before, but I just wanna get a presice answer in reguard to my gear.....What do I need to sync my Fostex G-16-S with my pooter (P4, 2.4GHz, 2 x 60GB HDD's).....I want to run the Pooter as a slave to the multitrack (I think that's wright?!?....) I want to use the mutitrack's auto locater and such......Reason being is, in a mutitracking situation, the bulk of the tracks will be done on the Fostex with any extra's running from the pooter......What hardware, software, steak knives do I need??????......Cheers guys!...

Unless your Fostex already generates sync (midi time code or SMPTE) - you'll need to stripe the tape with SMPTE, then use a sync box (JL Cooper is one option that comes to mind) to allow your computer s/w to sync with the SMPTE stripe.......

The sync track will eat up one of your tape tracks of course, but presumably this isn't an issue because you can simply record more tracks onto the computer......!

Ahh....Blue, thanks!......Ok....Stripe tape (how/with what???...the sync card from the fostex was taken out before I bought it)....Sunc box?....That's like a sympte read/write/interface for use with various machines yeah???....Is the box what I use for striping the tape as well?....What's a s/w???....How would I go about coupling everything together?...Audio out from the Fostex to the sync box???...Then where.......Sorry 'bout all the questions!!!.....

As far as eating a track...Yep, knew that and you're right, no bother at all!...

Ah...crap. I did this with my old Tascam 424 and it worked great. I can’t remember exactly what I had, but it was a sync box (from Midiman - Syncman maybe?). There was one button on there that you would push and it would record a tone on one track (that’s the stripe BlueBear referred to). The sync box was hooked up via midi cables to the computer and the sequencing software (Cakewalk in my case) would sync up to the stripe. That way I could run the audio from my midi keyboard back into the stereo input in my recorder for mix down.

I know this is kind of general, but maybe when I get home I can see if I can dig this thing out an have a memory refresh. Besides, I’m selling my old Tascam 424 and maybe I’ll throw this in to sweeten the deal :D.

What is a Fostex G16? We don't know every piece of gear out there. Is it digital or analog? Does it have a midi port?

Tex - Yeah, sorry man, in all my confusion I forgot to explain :) ...The Fostex is an analog 1/2 inch 16 track multitrack unit...

Jagular - Ok...I'm STARTING to get the idea now :) ....How's this....

*NEEDED*

Syncbox
Cables
Software that includes syncing capabillity

*process*

Have the (in my case) anolog input and output of the Fostex connected to the syncbox

Have the computer connected to the syncbox via a midi connection

Stripe one track of the analog machine with the syncbox

Then when in the programn (sync capable) that I want to sync with the Fostex, the fostex (via the syncbox) should be able to talk talk to the pooter....

Am I gettin' there??

Tried to find syncboxes on the net, but no luck....Are there any links?

Thanks again for you time guys....MUCH APRECIATED!!!!!

That sounds about right. (keep in mind it's been a while since I did this :D).

Try this:

http://www.midiman.net/products/midiman/syncman.php

They want $200 (US) for it which seems like an awful lot. I did a quick search on ebay and saw them going for a lot cheaper ATM. Not many of them, they seem kind of rare. Look around and see what you can find out there. If you have trouble finding one let me know. I know I have one around here somewhere that should be in pretty good shape. I'm sure we could even get it over there to Australia (I think I saw that is where you are from) for a lot less than $200. I was probably going to sell it anyway.

We'll talk later if you have trouble finding one. :)

(I'm not trying a hard sell here. Maybe someone else has some other options too)
