OK, I'm frustrated

I make hip hop/r&b tracks. I make my own instrumentals, but that's not what my problem has been. The problem is vocals. I use primarily Cool Edit Pro 2.0 for recording. I have a Samson C03 MultiPattern Condenser mic and ARTcessories Micro Mix phantom power supply, running through the ST Audio Media 7.1 sound card and external box. The room I record in is about 15' x 30' with ceilings about 11' high. It is a pretty quiet room, the only real noise the mic picks up comes from the computer, which is 2-3' away from the mic.

I'm really just not getting the sound quality I feel I should be. I've tried various
directions and such to sing in to the mic, tried using all the settings on the mic, etc, etc. I don't know what else to do, do you?


Also, do I need a seperate preamp in addition to my Media 7.1?

If your PC is a problem, get a dynamic mic such as the Shure Beta 57, or Sennheiser E845. I would second the JoeMeek threeQ because Paul White mentioned in his Sound on Sound review last month that the compressor and EQ could be extremely useful in hip-hop sounds, but the preamp itself is pretty transparent - so it'd give you a choice.

What are you monitoring with?
 
i think a preamp would help you most right now. what kind are you currently using? does your soundcard have one built in or something? I'm not too familiar with tha soundcard, what connections does it use? I havn't tried the joemeek but i have heard good things about it. If you are looking for a new preamp, check an RNP as well. they are really good.
 
Right now I'm using 2 M-audio Tampas into eather my M-Audio 2496 Card or my HD24. In your case you would just go into the 2496 Card.

I've recommend the Tascam FW1082 and get you a few out board pres like the Tampa which also have a killer compressor in it.

this is from www.staudio.com , It says there's a mic preamp, but I'm wondering the quality?
 
hmm sounds like a pretty good sound card. it may not be totally the preamp then (a better one still may help). How about adding some compression or some reverb? i notice a huge difference after controlling the dynamics of a vocal record with a hard limiter / compressor.
