OK I have a CD! Now What?

I started this post sort of as a joke, but now it seems a bit more serious....

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR FINAL MIX?

Sell it?
Give it away?
To Whom?
Bring it to school for "show and tell"?

Let's hear from all of you creative masters out there.

I'll start; I usually give away my completed projects to friends and relatives. I have had a few songs published years ago, but nothing lately.

Dom

Send it to Record Labels - Publishers - Lawyers - Anyone inside the Music industry that can get the attention of A&R reps......

F*** given it away......to friends and relatives...they didn't pay for it and if your like most artist they are not the ones supporting you anyway........If they like it.....buy it

Give it to all people you think can make a contribution in your warreer in the future: Publishers, A&R's, local Press, local studio's, producers...

Even if somebody isn't capabel of getting you a record deal, he's often capable of getting you one step closer. Movies make it seem that once you get 'discovered', everything is OK and suddenly you're able to distribute your CD. Most of the time a great record deal takes years of preparation.

If you're really satisfied about your own recording, you could search for a distribution deal.

i give em away though i have thought about selling them as frisbees or coasters. this is easy when you define success as self-satisfaction and have no money.

I have four people that I know will listen to my latest CD...my Mom, brother, sister, and old college friend.

They're all free, by the way.

gec,

I appreciate the offer, but I'm not a masochist! Honestly, the last people I want critiques from are musicians and recording enthusiasts, because they have totally different ears than the general "listening public." I've sold a number of them (less than 20, but more than 10) the past couple of weeks online, and have gotten great response from those who actually paid money. What do they know, though? Plus, I sell them cheap!

got us figured wrong in here my man.........

Every musician was a fan of music b4 they did it themselves.......and all musicians are still fans and are inspired by others....

gec,

I'm sure you're a sincere soul who likes to help and be positive, but I've seen what opening yourself up to the rest of the pack is like, and I'm not even actually looking for a critique -- I'm too much of a cry-baby and don't take criticism well at all.

I sell my C.D's anyway I can but mostly at functions I attend. I always carry my C.d's with me. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising. It your music is pretty good people will begain to ask for it.

Hey guys, I guess u must get ur stuff copyrited 1st?
Just wondering about how u go about that old chestnut?
how much does it cost etc...
Thanks & keep up the good work.

Yes that's a must, I down load my forms SR forms, and I believe it's still $30 bucks:)

Thanks Just. I`m pretty new to this game and I`ve already given away 2 cds of mine that WEREN`T copyrighted. Lucky for me they weren`t particularly great although one or two tracks had some potential. Just hope I can trust my friends!!
Anyway, sorry if these are dumb questions but-
1. What exactly do u mean by SR Forms?
2. Do you know if the procedure is the same in Britain?

Thanks again.

(SOUND RECORDINGS) This is the form you may want to use if you are able to burn your music to C.D. I'm not sure if the process is the same as Britian, but is not that hard. You can download any copyright form you may need @ www.loc.gov/copyright/forms/.
Good Luck;) ;) ;)

i got over 1000 frisbees to give away

i got alot of cd's left over from a bad record deal. I'm so disgusted with this phony record industry that i feel like flying these things as frisbees. Anyone wanna play catch. How 'bout we break some windows with 'em, or try to anyway.
my cd has about 5 top ten songs on it, easy, very strong hooks..... i think there'a alot of unknown cd's out there that would out do the "American Music Awards" hype any day of the week........ and all the hype and shallow pop of that guy with the big afro and sparkly shades..what's his name??? ha, ha,
Yeah, I'de like to throw them at all those industry lawyers and exects who have mastered the art of rippadeartist hoffa. ha ha .
you want success???? Get out with a band and get gigs and play at frat houses for free and jam with some skill damn it, not these people who who play shred guitar and hype it all up on stage with jumping off amps, but who's shred sound with all those obnoxiuos muddy guitar sounds, suck and are made for hypy kids of modern fad. Get back to the real music damn it! Stop watching it and start listening to it again!

Give 'em away!!!!!!!!!

No seriously.......not many people want to shell out money for semi-pro DIY music. Why should they? Most of the music I've listened to by amateurs really sucks (and i include some of my own stuff in that category) but the last people to realise this are the bands themselves.

I'm only being realistic. Our band had made some pretty cool music (but I'm on the inside of course) which we want as many people to listen to as possible. We do this: sign up to our mailing list & get a free CD. I'll only expect people to pay for our music when it's been professionally produced & professionally packaged. But that seems even further away than ever.....

If you want to make money as an artist, forget it! Just enjoy your music while you can. Any money is a bonus, but most of here are doing this out of love, not greed.

First... Copyright !!!
Then I'll do this combination... :
1. Let my friend's who seems like my music genre to listen to my CD, and get their objective comment.
2. Contact my "radio guy's" friends to have it played on their air.
and collect anything you can get from there. ( top40 chart, how many requested on a week, does people like it, etc )
3. Send the copy to major labels, and ask them nicely to listen to it, and if they don't like it, ask them if they know they "major label" friends who likes my kind of music ( which rarely they will tell...) or ask them why they don't like it. Ask for detail.
4. If nothing works, and still I think my record is good, try to find a friend who will invest on indie label. Or if I think it's not that worth, I'll try to record another song... but don't thrash the CD. It's very soldable when I get famous as a big star someday. (... you know what I mean... "...my old day garage record, limited edition..." )
5. Hey, at least I know the result, and learn something, right...?!
6. Yes, you may add number six, seven, eight, etc...

Well sheeze, people. Why do you even cut a CD if it doesn't have at least a couple of songs on it that the public would enjoy? Surely it does or you wouldn't have cut it. Pick your best one, edit it down for radio (not much over 3 minutes) and start sending it to agents, producers, groups that play that kind of music, song publishers, or whoever will listen to it. Maybe they then will include it on their next compilation album of songs they hope to release. If none do, then release it yourself. Beats gathering dust in the corner.

Make a nice cover on your PC, include some personal history and musical interests, and give them as gifts to your friends and family. If it's good enough to sell, talk to some local (maybe mom & pop) music stores about getting them in on a consignment basis. You may find them to be more receptive than you would think....good luck!
