So, you think your tunes are pretty hot! You`re producing your own stuff with technology. The world`s your oyster, the sky`s the limit. Who do you send it to? In what format?
CD, MP3? How do you protect your work (copywrite?) Any ideas/views welcome....... Slinky

The Short Version:
Send it on cassette or CD to labels, publishers, etc Although, Dreamworks, farmclub and a few other companies accept submissions via the web in MP3 format.

Copyright? YES!

The Long Version:
Regardless of whatever is done, Always copyright your work. Go to http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/ and fill out either Form PA or Form SR (depending).

You can go several ways:
1. Sell your recordings yourself - get out there and self-promote, gig, do the Internet warrior thing, try to get radio airplay, try to get your material in stores, get your material to distributors, the whole nine.
2. Try to get another label to pick this music up. Contact A&R staff at the labels, managers who have clout, publishers and other industry gateways
3. Try to get a publishing deal in the hopes that other artists will record you stuff or that the publishing deal will lead to a record deal
4. Sit on the music and play it for yourself and friends
5. Sell music to companies in need of advertising music?

The real question is not what CAN be done, but what you WANT to do with it. We can philosiphize all day, but when it comes down to it, How do you work? To what extent are you prepared or willing to do this work? Do you want to be onstage or just a behind-the-scenes person? What are your goals in the business of music? What are your weaknesses/strengths?

Which way?

Hey, Rev E, great to hear from you! I go with what you`re saying. It`s about doing anything you can think of to get yourself heard. For me it`s as much about expressing myself as about the hard sell, although the two meet somewhere I`m sure. My strength is my guitar playing for sure, but I also love designing my own tunes with technological tools. But,
after spending time at the computer I realise how much more satisfying live performance can be. I havn`t been into technology long now so my setup is still in its infancy. I put up a web-site with some mp3s (for free) though the tunes
arn`t marketable in my opinion. Better get them there huh?
I`m in Brighton area UK, need to perform more regularly.
Greetings to you my friend, thanks for the input, Slinky

I'm glad you're at least figuring out what you want and like to do. That's usually the hardest part. It took me a few years to really figure out what I really wanted out of this thing called the music business. Even now, I'm still not always completely sure that I can do it all. Go for it and let us know how your progress is.

Rev E

REV E, you give good advice. You may be able to answer a question for me. What do "publishers" actually do, how did they become "publishers", and why does a song have to be "published" before a radio station will air it? What happens at the actual moment that a song becomes "published"?
Thanks, this is bugging me to death! ~~ tbolding
