I would ask Emeric about the side by side comparison with cubase, my experience has been a very nice one.
I invested 489.00 into vegas pro/audio, only to find that I.m.h.o, it just wasn't what I wanted [not enough editing features] and several debilitating bugs,[bus rendering inaccuracies, frequent crashes].
Nuendo alone has alot of the editing features of something like sound forge, etc, and I have been able to use many more tracks/plugins[both direct-X, and vst] than in vegas.
Used in combo with Wavelab 3.03. its the shit,
it is a bit pricey, but the features seem to justify it,
it has excellent automation, including alot of fx parameters, hell, I'm startin to sound like I work for them or something heh.
Initially, one of the things that interested me in nuendo was the similarity to vegas, the way things looked, and behaved, unlimited undo , undo history,
real time processing, [in nuendo you can access the trans port play/ rewind, via hotkeys etc.regardless of what window or function has focus, I know vegas is supposed to do this but the f12 of space bar thing never works for me hmmm...]
any way I'll end the infomercial by saying that I've found it incredibly stable,[not one crash or problem in 5 months],
very powerful/flexable, fairly easy to learn, [although this tool is very deep].
I,ve noticed a dramatic increase in the number of plugins, and tracks that I can now utilize.
VEGAS was/is a very good product, but it seems to me that they have a habit of designing an almost genious product, and then leave it on the back burner to waste away.
Anyway thats my .02
