Ok, so I have a copy of Vegas Pro v1.0.

Im a pretty devout supporter of CoolEdit Pro.. Ive done 2 CDs on it and know it well.

Convince me to spend another couple months learning the ins and outs of vegas. Is it Worth it? Can it record at 24bit, 48k? I can only figure out playback @44,1...

It looks pretty, but I bet it sucks ass.

Special points to poeple who have used CEP a lot, but like Vegas better.

Free Your mind

did you say another couple of months?

More like another couple of hours.
THis stuff is so easy to use that it almost seems unfair sometimes.

It's very easy to master and it does 24 bit. The only problem with it is Soundforge as the editor which is still limited to 16 bits. IMHO it smokes CEP.

in addition

it also does 96khz if you have to capability for that

I say a couple months cuz I know CEP like an extension of my mind, and it takes that long to learn all the keyboard moves and all that.

OK, HOW do you set it to Higher freq.?? does it do 48?, or just 96?

and not to be lame, but 'smokes' doesn't seem like a very accurate descriptive term. What does it do better? Have you used both? All I know is that it has lame icons instead of nice little boxes for mute and solo and stuff. looks more like a play-school toy than a recording machine....

And what good is it if it's editor is 16bit? Can I set CEP as the default editor?

thanks... im still not convinced. keep it coming.

You set the sample rate and sample size in the properties dialog of each .veg file. But you can mix and match imported tracks of differing sample rate and size (even .mp3s). Just drag them onto the grid and Vegas does the conversion on the fly. The value you set in the properties dialog affects the format of the mixdown.

Damn Camn you got us all doing your work for ya.

Open "Options>Preferences>Audio" to select the location of your preferred audio editor.

And you're right, Vegas does look like a preschool toy. Which means it's so easy even a drummer could figure it out.

;) ;) ;)

in my properties box, under audio, the highest bit depth I can set is 16, and the highest sampling rate is 441.... but I have imported 24bit files before....hmmm is there a newer version than v1.0?

Well- then it should work. Don't give up just yet. Even on my system with a GINA that doesn't support 24/96 recording, I just took a recent .wav file @ 16/44.1 and did a 'mix to new track' but set the track properties to be 24/96. The 39.20 MB original now had a twin that occupied 128.00 MB.
The weird thing is that the 24/96 version played fine on my GINA- of course no increase in resolution occurred, but I'm still unsure whether Vegas or GINA lopped off the 8 least significant bits and downsampled on the fly. Probably GINA. Downsampling had to have occurred because the playback was at the same speed as the original. Recording directly at an unsupported sample size and rate is not a selection because there is no way to do it.
But that's the way it should be, right?
I'm thinking you haven't hit the 'custom' button and added the format you want to the dropdown list you ARE seeing....

yo know what I CAN do is type in 96000... but then if I apply it and close the window and reopen it, its back to 441... and it wont let me type in anything above 16bit...:(

xoxo

Listen up Camn: You don't type in the selections. They're all part of Vegas and can't be changed.
Put any .wav file on the track grid. This is necessary because if you have nothing there to mix down or tracks are muted this won't work.
Click on Tools/Mix to New Track.
Set the "save as" to ".wav".
HIT THE 'CUSTOM' button! Is there an echo in here?
In the dialog box you'll get use the "sample rate" and "bit depth" controls to set the mixdown format. Your choice will be reflected in the "attributes" box.
Hit the "apply" button, followed by the "OK" button.
Back at the original screen, just hit the "Save" button.

I'm just guessing at the reason for this runaround. They're trying to keep the list of attributes short instead of making you choose it from the full list. Not that important 'cause the list is pretty short to begin with, but you can give these formats names that mean something to you..
Once they're named they will appear in your list.

OK- the dialog box you want is this:

It's the Audio tab of the Properties dialog box.

Those arrows to the right of where it shows the sample rate and bit depth don't work for you? Clicking on them should give you a list of all Vegas supported values. Select the ones you want and then "apply" it. What it does on my system when I try to use a bit depth larger than my soundcard supports (24 bits) is create a 32 bit file with 16 zeros added to the real 16 bits. Similarly with sample rate. I can record to a 96 KHz file and the filesize agrees with that resolution and it plays back fine; since 96 is 2.176871 times 44.1, I'm wondering how this is done.

The realtime effects are easy to chain. You select an effect by creating an effects chain that can have as many as your system can handle (never tried this). I usually limit it to a little EQ and compression. Once they're selected and active whatever plays on that track is the insert return.
You need to blend the original? Dup the track and mix the effected one with the plain one.

can I click the effect on and off while listening to the full mix?

xoxo

Yup.
On individual tracks OR the whole mix for the whole chain of effects. Even on one effect in a chain. The latency ain't too bad but it sure as hell isn't instantaneous.
