How come so many of the real knowledgable guys only hang out on the mic forum? I want to ask questions about noise gates and acoustic treatments and all kinds of stuff ... yet the guys who I want to answer - you know who I mean, Harvey, both the chesses, DJL, etc etc etc - save their best work for the mic board. Not fair!

Here's one I'll sneak in now - if I use some headphones and a DI box to make a recording, can I damage the phones? I'm gonna put them over an acoustic and see what sound they produce, been meaning to try it for ages but want to just check first.

As a microphone, you won't damage the headphones using them in that manner. Just don't turn on phantom power.
:D

D'ya know what you've just reminded me? That I STILL haven't bought any of your headphones. Silly me. I'll get on it once I know whether CanopuS wants some ... we were talking about them but I can't remember what he decided [Kit - email me!].

I should apologise of course to Richie, John Scrip, Warren et al who help retards like me on all the forums. I think I spend too much time answering questions I already know on here, and not enough time reading answers to questions I don't!

Noise, flattered by your including me in the think tank group here:).

My engineering ability is just on the level of "home entertainment"!
It's been handy to improve live performances though.
The more I learn, the less I realize I really know.

If and when I go into a pro studio to record, at least have an idea of what goes on now...

Chris

Email sent. Sounds like an intruiging idea....

I try to divide my time here between the mic forum, the rack forum, the recording techniques forum and, the other equipment and reviews forum, with infrequent trips into the cave. I spend most of my time here at the mic forum, since there is so little accurate microphone information around and a lot of misinformation as to how mics work and how to use them.

I try to look at harmony central, gearslutz, Al Schmitt's forum, recording.org, recording projects, studio central, studioforums, tapeop, and mojo pie. In addition, I also look at r.a.p. and maybe 20 other newsgroups several times a day.

I have my own forum at prosoundweb, where I share moderating duties with moderators like George Massenburg, Fletcher, Klause Hynes, Bob Olhsson, Mixerman, and a few other luminaries (although I don't qualify as a luminary).

I also check in at the JBL forum and the Acoustic Control forum to answer questions about stuff I designed for them years ago.

Then of course (as a little hobby), I also run a two room commercial recording studio (employing two engineers), I manufacture and distribute MoreMe headphones, and ocassionally consult on new products for other audio manufacturers. For the last 8 years, I've been writing a monthly column for a local music magazine in Dallas, and any time that's left over is the rest of my life.

I'm tired just from reading your schedule ! :D

It's nice to see that you take the time to help people. If no ones said it, It's much appreciated.

As Harvey said... you won't hurt the headphones... you could also experiment with speakers as a mic... sometimes (for example) this along with another mic (near the beater) can work well on kick drum.

Thanks! I might give that a try too.

Nonsense. You talk sense, and I guess a lot of it is to do with listening to people like Harvey etc very carefully!

Harvey - I wasn't (nor would I) question your work rate ... if I'm anywhere near as busy as you when I'm 67, I'll be either totally pissed off ... or way too busy to notice.:)
