Not a Mod
So I got bored one day and raced through this song. I wish I could post it on RP but it's a cover. So I'll sneak it in here.

Comment if you want. It's got some pretty bad performances on it.

I would like some comments on the overall tone and mix of things. I know it might be hard with the out of time/key performances. But hey, it's punk rock, it isn't supposed to be good. Which was the point of the cover in the first place. I took a song called punk that isn't, and made it punker than your mom.

Oh god, it's really horrible. :D

edit- it might be kinda hot, so turn down your speakers, just in case. In fact it might sound best if you wait until the song is done to turn up the speakers at all.:D

umm........................ok, here goes...

This is an interesting version of "My Way" by Frank Sinatra.

The Melody and words are a little different that how I remember Johnnie Rotten doing them but this version has merit.

Cheers, Bud! :):D

I'm confused. Are you saying it's like when Johny covered Frank? Or are you saying this is "My Way." Because it's not. It's a cover of Avril Levigne's song "Complicated." I can't help it if she ripped off Frank.

Thanks for the comments anyway, even if I don't understand them.:D

Made me smile D!!!! I like your verson better than hers!!!

Well, ok. :)

I was in a funny mood when I wrote up the first review and I assumed that you were feeling no pain either to post something like that.:)

Anyway to answer your questions in your original post, about the overall tone and mix of things, there does seem to be a pretty good level of clarity to the mix in that if I am listening for what a specific part is doing, I can easily hear it.

Tone wise, here too, nothing from memory was hurting my speakers or my ears beyond your original disclaimers, of which there were several!:D

Cheers! :)

Betty- Thanks for the compliment. I'm glad you like it.

Ghost- So you think it sounds good except for the performance? That's really cool of you to say. Next time I'll take more than an hour and record something better.

I couldn't work out what the fuck it was but I'd like to point out that it was SID that covered My way, Not Johnny

Actualy the recording didn't sound too bad at all. You obviously have some pretty decent equipment and the engineering skills to go with it. I have my own little Sex Pistols punk cover HERE dut I didn't have the luxuary or a real drum kit.

Yeah I liked it. Old punks never die we just start bathing regular ;)

Keep at it,

Alec

LMAO! Depends on what you say is decent equipment. I just have the regular budget shit everybody else has.

Drums: D112 on bass, 57 on snare, and a pair of MC012's for overheads.

Gits: 57 on the grill

Bass: direct

Vox were either a 57 or a SP B1, I don't remember.

I uses a DMP3 preamp and an RNC all run into an ADAT LX20.

Lemontree: Thanks so much for the great compliment. It really means a lot to me to think that somebody thinks I have some talent.

yeah cool man. For the pistols cover up there I used..........

Drums: Fruity Loops

Guitars: Behringer V-Amp Pro

Bass: DI'd through the desk

Vox: SP B1

I'm definately with Ghost.... Nothing jumps out and abuses my ears.

Damnit Lemon tree. Your song is totally rocking. Makes my look so small and stupid. :(

I think your version sounds better than the original. You totally nailed the vox. It sounds just like Johnny. And the playing is way tighter than the pistols ever pulled off.

The drums sound great for being fruity loops.

So, thanks for making my song look even worse.:D

Oh wait, I just noticed you are from Scotland. That isn't fair, I had to fake my accent.

HAHAHAHA!!! Aye Pal tha's right, am ur fae Scotland. A'd tae fake the accent tae

I dig almost any song that pokes at A.L. So, this is pretty cool.

The only thing that's driving me nuts is the drums... They sound clear, actually the clearest thing in the mix, but there's so much phase cancellation... The stereo field in the drums is about 60-70 degrees wider than my monitor placement.

Do a Britney cover now!

MM- So you are saying I should pan the drums less? That's something I never payed attention to. Could you maybe elaborate a little more. I'm not real sure what you mean by the phase cancellation, and that the image is wider than your speakers. Thanks. Oh yeah, I've been pondering a Britney cover for awhile. I haven't gotten around to it, but maybe I will soon. For an awesome cover of Baby one more time, check out Ahmet and Dweezil's version. It's really a rocking song.

Lemontree- I know you don't have the same accent. But it's got to be easier to fake because you live closer. At least that's what I'm telling myself. Just to make myself feel better. :D
Just for the record, I think the Scottish accent is the best in the whole English speaking world. I'd move there just so I could pick it up. :D

Not enough time for a really specific answer - (Blue Bear, got a few minutes today?)

Try panning the drums all to the center and notice how they seem to almost vanish - That's phase cancellation.

In open air stereo, if gives the illiusion of sound coming from beyond the speaker placement.

Normal case - It's coming from the same sound hitting different mics at different times. Certain frequencies at certain times are cancelling each other out.

I'd love to get more specific, but the docket is pretty full today...

John

generally I would pass up a post with so many upfront excuses.

Take away the singing, the backing music has some pontential, imo. The singing is really lame, like the singer doesn't really give a shit. If peformers don't care, the listeners might tend not to either.

sounds like you're on a decent direction to getting a good sound. Get "un"bored...and you might do something you like!!:D

It's not so much the singer doesn't care as he has not talent. BTW- the singer is me.:D

Actually I was kinda going for a disinterested vibe on the whole thing. A kind of "This song is so lame, I don't even care to do any of it right."

But with all the positive feedback on the backing tracks, I'm thinking of redoing the whole thing and trying a little harder.

Maybe next time I won't have to make so many excuses. Thanks for taking the time to listen to it, and comment.

MM- I measured out the snare and bass to each overhead mic to make sure the distance was the same. I wonder how the phase got screwed up. Thanks for the explanation. I'll definitely listen for this problem in future recordings.

What kills me about this is that I can tell you can belt, in KEY...I could hear it in spots, lol.

I understand kinda' what you were doing with this, so I won't go on about the MULTIPLE fuckups, lol...but I'm posting to let you know that I think you really SHOULD take another shot at this.

The vocal and the fucked up timing are the big issues, but you might go for a little bigger guitar sound next time too?? Maybe?? It sounds DI'd to me, or maybe a pignose amp with the gain on 10.

This might have been my practice amp. A little 15 watt Crate. I'm going to go work on this right now. It just kinda sucks, because the original is such a catchy pop song it keeps getting stuck in my head. And I'll be singing it all day long.

I never expected to get any compliments at all on this. I just wanted to post SOMETHING. Thanks so much guys. :D
