Oh My God! Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well here's the deal, I'm using a 300mhz beige g3/512 mb ram/OS 8.6. I had installed a 20 GB 7200 rpm maxtor ATA/IDE HD. The 20GB HD used to be non-partitioned, but a few months ago I had made 4 smaller partitions on this drive. I partitioned the drive to have a 2GB for system folder and some apps, a 2 GB for music apps, a 5GB, and a 10 GB. It seemed when I did this partition, strange little things started-like sometimes the startup system (folder/HD) wouldn't be recognized-you know the floppy disk on screen with the ? mark in the middle. I could do restarts, and still the same thing-even a weird little screach sound would happen, sounded like a mix between screaching breaks & breaking glass. If I ever heard that sound at the start of a day, I automatically knew the HD had failed to start. I would literally have to uplug the mac power cord, replug the power, start the machine and then the partitioned drives would show up.

:o :o
Now here's the scary F'*&%@!?in part; The system has just crashed-no partitioned HD's to be found period, no matter what I do. I can boot (holding down c) from norton utilities & Mac OS 8.5 CD-roms, and neither see/recognize the partitioned ATA/IDE HD. In other words the HD isn't there period! Norton volume recover, disk doctor, etc. will not work because the HD isn't showing up. I can run the Mac Utility-Disk Setup, and setup does see that there is an ATA device there, and the setup app says the ATA isn't initialized  :( The bad part about this is, to reinitialize erases all info on the HD, and I have authorization keys installed on this drive (i.e. Pro Tools, D-fx, Cubase, SFX Machine, Auto-Tune, etc. etc.), plus I've got sessions on one of these partitions. I can't afford to loose any of those keys.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!! BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!!

Anybody got the answer to this-get's an atta boy! How can I get this HD back without eraseing the disk which contains the keys?

EL TON-O-MUCHO THANKO

This sounds like a job for DiskWarrior!

When your directory get's trashed this bad there ain't much else you can do. DiskWarrior is often successful at recovering files off drives that Norton can't even see let alone repair.

May I also suggest one of the Best Mac help sites on the net.

Good luck.

TO: M.Brane

Hey Dude, thanks for the relpy. I had another 17GB internal SCSI HD on this machine. So, by booting (holding c) and installing OS 8.5 onto that 17GB, and wouldn't you know it-after restarting on the 17GB SCSI HD, the missing 20GB ATA reappears. WHEW!!!!!!!! So I'm in the process of running Norton's etc. I may just move/back up everything on the 20GB ATA, and reformat it with no partitions, because it seems as though when I did the partition is when the weird stuff started.

You still get the atta boy & EL TON-OMUCHO THANKO'S.

Thanks for that mac forum site, it looks pretty informative.

Ciao

Good to see your on track.:)

The Guru's site rocks. Nice, helpful folks with tons-o-knowledge on all things Mac.

Question: any particular reason your still using 8.6? I run 9.1 on my 8500 and it's a beautiful thing.

8.6

Yeah, the reason I'm running 8.6 on this particualr G3 is: I have rebirth 2.0.1 on there, I tried to go up to 9.2.2, but rebirth would only run on 8.6. The 300 G3 is basically my software synth (rebirth, Bitheadz black & whites, etc.), running DP 2.72 with a Korg Oasys (killer) card in there. Although I do still have Pro Tools (AMIII card), and Cubase on there which I still occassionally run.

I have a pretty complex system, all etherneted together-a 333beige g3/649MB ram/OS 9.2.2, w/an adaptec SCSI accelerator card & 2 4GB quantum's set up as a raid array, running DP 2.72. And, I've also got a performa 6400/Newer Tech L2 400mhz upgrade/OS 8.6, this machine is basically for backing up sessions, and internet & office stuff. I tried to go up to 9.2.2 on the performa, but it went completely nuts, and I spent probably 2 weeks getting it back to running correctly w/8.6. I usually record all my audio into DP on the 333 (MOTU 2408/ADAT XT20), and do midi to the 300 in DP, with the 2 machines MTC locked together. But, every session is different, so this isn't always the way I work, sometimes I may do all midi/audio on one machine, it just depends on the session.

Thanks again

Say, I've just completed a children's CD-it's got some pretty cool stuff on it-for adults too. Check out these sites (bio, reviews, mp3's, etc.) and help spread the word-SUPPORT INDIE MUSIC!!!!!!!!

Make backups! :)

Then the next time something like this occurs you won't be so close to a heart attack.

To: christiaan

Trust me, I make backup, of the backups, that are backed up-see the above reply to M.Brane. It was more the authorize keys more than anything, but I had started a track last night which I had not had time to back up yet. Anyhoo-Thanks You cats are the coolest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9.2.2 on a Performa?

No wonder it went nuts. I wouldn't even think of putting 9.2 on my 8500. Some tried it when it came out and quickly found out that 9.1 is the best OS for beige Macs. One of the guys on the Gurus site has OS 10 on an 8500 but I wouldn't even go there. Mine is very stable with 9.1. If I want to run 10 I'll bite the bullet and get some new hadrware. The whole audio thing is still getting sorted out so I'll wait for the adventurous to iron-out the wrinkles first.

M.Brane/FL?

So M.Brane, you're in FL eh, what part? I lived in in PC for about 7 yrs, played frequently @ Club LaVela and Spinnaker, if you've ever heard of those places. I also lived in Orlando, and Jacksonville.

Ha! I was waiting for that one.

Actually I'm on the left coast. I used that slogan because my hometown uses it. I figured it would cause some confusion.

Born and raised in SoCal and never lived out of state.;)

My best friend's old man lives in the sunshine state (or God's waiting room as I like to call it).
Plays a mean keyboard down there. Too many bugs for me.;)

OK-I forgot, FL is the sunshine state-DUH.

Well I lived there too, so there-ha. For real, I lived in El Centro, Diego, and Crescent City for a little while. No, I wasn't in prison, but I did work for a company that built prisons. So, yeah I've been inside one of the badest of the bad houses-PELICAN BAY-super maximum security-hey now.
